APEC ministers pledge to deny safe haven to corrupt officials

The ministers from Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries agreed to deny safe haven to corruption offenders, according to a joint statement issued after an online meeting.

The officials highlighted that corruption is a serious threat. They argue it destroys public trust and hinders economic growth.

At the same time, corruption increased in times of crisis.

– We reaffirm our commitment to deny safe haven to corruption offenders and their assets, in accordance with domestic laws, and to combat transnational corruption. We will promote transparency, accountability, integrity and a culture of rejection of corruption across our region, as a basis for preventing corruption and ending impunity, – APEC ministers said.

The ministers also intend to find a united approach in the fight against corruption, calling for cooperation with international organizations and experts.
