The same year the company became known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caracal_Energy\">Caracal Energy Inc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glencore\">Glencore Plc<\/a> bought the company in 2014, the corrupt proceeds entered British jurisdiction, according to the SFO.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The regulator froze in 2014 the $6.2 million representing the sale of shares previously held by <a href=\"http:\/\/expert-evidence.com\/saleh-v-sfo\/\">Ikram Mahamat Saleh<\/a>, the wife a former top-level Chadian diplomat in the US. The money had been credited to an account at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Bank_of_Scotland\">Royal Bank of Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ms. Saleh is accused of acquiring the money through corrupt share transactions, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bailii.org\/cgi-bin\/format.cgi?doc=\/ew\/cases\/EWHC\/QB\/2015\/2119.html&amp;query=(saleh)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Saleh has challenged the order since 2014. She has 21 days to appeal Thursday\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThis is a positive result in the ongoing fight against criminals who attempt to hide their ill-gotten gains in our jurisdiction,\u201d explained outgoing SFO director <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Green_(Director_of_the_SFO)\">David Green<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The recovered funds will be allocated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Department_for_International_Development\">Department of International Development (DFID)<\/a> to be invested in projects for poverty alleviation in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chad\">Chad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe UK Government has a zero tolerance approach to corruption and today\u2019s landmark judgment means this money can be used to help the people of Chad,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harriett_Baldwin\">Harriett Baldwin<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foreign_and_Commonwealth_Office\">Minister of State for International Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe will now be working on the details of how these recovered funds can best help one of the poorest countries in the world,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Saleh case comes after the SFO has established a precedent for returning recovered funds in bribery and corruption prosecutions back to the country\u2019s where the bribes originate having done so after cases involving Kenya and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tanzania\">Tanzania<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: OCCRP.
