Sen. Antonio \u201cSonny\u201d Trillanes IV <\/a>on Monday pushed for the Office of the Ombudsman\u2019s <\/a>investigation against President Rodrigo Duterte<\/a> citing his \u201cadmission\u201d of corruption as grounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During his speech at the 140th founding anniversary of the Philippine Chinese Charitable Association Inc.<\/a> last June 29, Duterte expressed anger over the continued corruption in government. He then jokingly cited himself as a former corrupt official and admitted to having committed theft.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate corruption. Hindi ako nagmamakalinis, marami rin akong nanakaw pero naubos na, so wala na,\u201d Duterte said.<\/p>\n

For Trillanes, the president\u2019s statement is enough proof of corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis admission confirms my corruption allegation against Duterte. I have filed a case against him before the ombudsman, along with the necessary evidence to support the case. This admission should be a reason to expedite the investigation,\u201d Trillanes said.<\/p>\n

In May 2016, Trillanes filed a plunder case against Duterte before the Office of the Ombudsman. He complained about the president\u2019s alleged unexplained wealth and undeclared billions in his bank accounts.<\/p>\n

The senator also complained about Duterte\u2019s\u00a0alleged hiring of 11,000 ghost employees during his term as Davao\u00a0City<\/a> mayor, which, according to Trillanes, could be one of the sources of unexplained wealth.<\/p>\n

Trillanes also\u00a0revived his concern on the supposed undeclared wealth<\/a>\u00a0of Duterte last February. He said it is an old issue but needs to be addressed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
