Four men have been jailed for being involved in corrupt payments to secure work\u00a0on the Farringdon Station<\/a> upgrade for the Thameslink<\/a> and Crossrail<\/a> projects in London<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n

Contractor Alandale Rail<\/a>, part of the Alandale Group<\/a>, was also convicted of corruption and fined \u00a325,000 for its involvement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Blackfriars Crown Court<\/a> in London heard how British Transport Police<\/a> fraud investigators uncovered a ring\u00a0of corruption and bribery on\u00a0a large contract to upgrade Farringdon station.<\/p>\n

Former operations director Kevin McKee and fellow director John Zayya<\/a> of Alandale Rail made corrupt payments to a senior manager working for Farringdon station\u00a0joint venture contractors Costain\/Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/a> so they could secure the contract to supply safety critical staff on the project.<\/p>\n

CoLOR joint venture senior manager Innocent Obiekwe was nicknamed \u2018our man in Havana\u2019 by the two Alandale directors as he supplied confidential information during the tender process.<\/p>\n

The information provided to Alandale Rail by Obiekwe ensured that they had a positive influence on the tender process and could undercut bids made by competitors. The initial value of the contract was \u00a32.1m but eventually rose to \u00a35.2m.<\/p>\n

<\/i>After Alandale Rail won the Farringdon contract by corruption, McKee, Zayya and Obiekwe then went on to defraude CoLOR by claiming for \u2018ghost worker\u2019 shifts.<\/p>\n

Payments were claimed for workers who never attended the site or carried out any work, and invoices and timesheets were falsified to disguise the bogus claims.<\/p>\n

Throughout the investigation, British Transport Police fraud investigators identified payments in excess of \u00a3140,000 paid to Obiekwe along with other gifts and favours.<\/p>\n

The proceeds of this fraud was shared amongst them, with the lion\u2019s share going to Obiekwe.<\/p>\n

When this practice was uncovered Zayya continued to send money to Obiekwe by using an intermediary William Waring, director at management consultancy Qualitas Infrastructure Developments<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Zayya skimmed from the operatives\u2019 rates of pay and used Waring and his company, Qualitas, to pay the cash to Obiekwe.<\/p>\n

Their operation came to light in 2011 after McKee told CoLOR and Transport for London<\/a> of their dishonest practices, sparking an investigation.<\/p>\n
