{"id":2906,"date":"2017-08-02T16:08:34","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T13:08:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=2906"},"modified":"2017-08-10T11:11:47","modified_gmt":"2017-08-10T08:11:47","slug":"byvshij-prezident-brazilii-v-shestoj-raz-predstanet-pered-sudom-za-korrupciyu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/byvshij-prezident-brazilii-v-shestoj-raz-predstanet-pered-sudom-za-korrupciyu\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Brazil President Lula faces sixth trial for corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-corruption-lula-idUSKBN1AH5HW\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SAO PAULO (Reuters) \u2013 Former Brazilian President\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luiz_In%C3%A1cio_Lula_da_Silva\">Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva<\/a><strong>, already found guilty of corruption in one graft trial, will now face a sixth trial on charges related to a sweeping political kickback scheme that sent Latin America\u2019s biggest economy into political chaos, a judge ordered on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A federal judge said in a court document that Lula would stand trial for allegedly accepting 1 million reais ($320,000) in refurbishing at a country home, in return for political favors from the former leader.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Car_Wash\">Car Wash<\/a>\u201d investigation focuses on billions in bribes paid by some of Brazil\u2019s biggest businesses in return for lucrative contracts at state-run companies.<\/p>\n<p>Executives from builder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Odebrecht\">Odebrecht SA<\/a>\u00a0[ODBES.UL] and engineering firm\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oas.com\/oas-com-1\/home.htm\">OAS SA<\/a>\u00a0said in plea-bargain deals they made the improvements at the property located just north of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A3o_Paulo\">Sao Paulo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lula has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence of any wrongdoing in the kickback scheme, which has seen over 100 politicians, businessmen and others go to jail, four living former presidents put under investigation and current leader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michel_Temer\">Michel Temer<\/a>\u00a0charged with allegedly accepting bribes.<\/p>\n<p>Lula\u2019s legal team did not respond to requests for comment on the latest trial.<\/p>\n<p>Lula was found guilty last month and sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison for accepting 3.7 million reais worth of bribes from engineering firm OAS, the amount of money prosecutors said the company spent refurbishing a beach apartment for Lula in return for his help winning contracts with state oil company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petrobras\">Petroleo Brasileiro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The former president is free pending appeal.
