Congress rejects corruption charges, preventing Temer from\u00a0<\/strong>Supreme Court<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0trial that could have seen him ousted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s lower house of congress voted on Wednesday to reject a corruption charge against President\u00a0<\/strong>Michel Temer<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0for allegedly taking bribes, saving him from facing a possible Supreme Court trial that could have ousted him from office.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At least 172 of the 513 members of the lower\u00a0Chamber of Deputies<\/a>\u00a0had voted by late Wednesday against putting Temer on trial for allegedly orchestrating a scheme to line his own pockets with millions of dollars in illicit payments.<\/p>\n

Temer won enough ballots to keep the opposition from gaining the two-thirds of the vote \u2013\u00a0or 342 votes\u00a0\u2013 required to move the corruption case forward to the top court. A final tally was expected later Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

The strong show of support for Temer raised the prospects that he can now move ahead with controversial economic reforms in an economy emerging from recession.<\/p>\n

Al Jazeera\u2019s\u00a0Daniel Schweimler<\/a>, reporting from\u00a0Brasilia<\/a>, said Temer was always confident he would win the vote and had pledged over $1bn of government funds for projects to various members of congress to ensure their vote.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo he is no doubt is breathing a sigh of relief \u2013 for now at least,\u201d said\u00a0Schweimler.<\/p>\n

But Temer is widely expected to face more corruption charges in the coming weeks, which would again put his presidency at stake.<\/p>\n

\u2018Tired of so much suspicion\u2019<\/h3>\n

Opposition lawmakers, carrying briefcases stuffed with fake money, chanted \u201cOut with Temer!\u201d on the house floor at the start of the day-long tumultuous session.<\/p>\n

Temer\u2019s main coalition ally, the\u00a0Brazilian Social Democracy Party<\/a>\u00a0(PSDB<\/a>), which seeks to win the presidential election next year, was split on whether to back Temer, whose economic policies it shares, or distance itself from his corruption-plagued government.<\/p>\n

PSDB leader\u00a0Ricardo Tripoli<\/a>, calling for the charge to be approved, said Temer must be investigated, \u201cnot because we want to oust the president, but because Brazilians are tired of so much suspicion surrounding their politicians\u201d.<\/p>\n

To shield Temer only further undermines the credibility of Brazil\u2019s political system, Tripoli said.<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s top prosecutor\u00a0Rodrigo Janot<\/a>\u00a0in June charged Temer with arranging to eventually receive a total of 38 million reais ($12.16m) in bribes from the world\u2019s largest meatpacker,\u00a0JBS SA<\/a>\u00a0in return for political favours.<\/p>\n

Temer and his legal team have denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s stocks and currency rose earlier on Wednesday after a cloture vote signalled a victory for Temer and robust support for his reform agenda to cut spending and restore confidence in government accounts.<\/p>\n

\u2018This drama is by no means over\u2019<\/h3>\n

Armando Castelar<\/a>, a professor of economics at the\u00a0Federal University of Rio de Janeiro<\/a>, told Al Jazeera that \u2013 although Temer\u2019s approval ratings are very low \u2013 the vote showed Temer\u2019s strength in congress and he will be able to return to his economic agenda \u2013 and that Castelar said that\u00a0Temer\u2019s pledge not to run for re-election in 2019 is a further strength.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis usually facilitates support in congress because parties don\u2019t see him as a future opponent if things go well. So this may work for the better for the economy \u2013 obviously it\u2019s not a desirable situation for a political perspective,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Brazil is in such a difficult position \u2013 with the public sector accounts and low growth, that maybe for this moment it\u2019s not bad news,\u201d said\u00a0Castelar.<\/p>\n

Al Jazeera\u2019s Daniel Schweimler said that, while Temer says he wants to get on with running the country, the so-called \u2018Car Wash<\/a>\u2018 corruption investigation in which he and many others were implicated is still ongoing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe opposition are hoping that more revelations will come to light, especially as many of those implicated are plea-bargaining, they\u2019re naming names, and the opposition are convinced that Michel Temer\u2019s name will come to the fore again,\u201d said\u00a0Schweimler.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd [Temer] will no doubt be back in congress at some stage defending himself against new charges of corruption \u2013 although he has said he\u2019s innocent and he wants to continue governing. So this drama is by no means over.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
