The suspect was very usual. EFCC\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/headlines\/239620-unbelievable-efcc-traces-n47-2billion-487-5million-ex-minister-diezani-alison-madueke.html\">announced on Wednesday<\/a>,\u00a0through a letter to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/\">Premium Times<\/a>, that it had found and recovered \u201cillegally acquired cash and properties\u201d worth a total of $ 650 million, all belonging to beleaguered former Nigerian Petroleum Minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diezani_Alison-Madueke\">Diezani Alison-Madueke<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The EFCC, in its statement,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-08-09\/nigeria-graft-agency-traced-615-million-to-ex-oil-minister\">claims it discovered<\/a>\u00a0\u201cboxes of gold, silver and diamond jewellery, worth several million pounds\u201d at the residence of the former oil minister in Nigeria. In addition, the agency also claims that it had re-possessed dozens of buildings across the nation all belonging to the former petroleum minister. In its letter to Premium Times, the agency clearly stated it had received legal backing from the Nigerian judiciary to reclaim the said properties. This latest discovery, called \u201cthe tip of the iceberg\u201d by EFCC\u2019s boss <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ibrahim_Lamorde\">Ibrahim Magu<\/a>, comes barely a month after the former oil minister was charged with money laundering of about $ 144 million in the United States,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/1032997\/nigeria-oil-corruption-diezani-alison-madueke-and-kola-alukos-one57-manhattan-condo-luxury-yachts-and-ferrari-racing\/\">in connection with a bribery scandal,<\/a>\u00a0relating to illegal oil contracts granted through shell companies. Diezani was also arrested in the London in October of 2015 over bribery and money laundering in connection with that year\u2019s presidential elections in Nigeria. She was later released on bail and has remained in London ever since then.<\/p>\n<p>A partisan group yesterday, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bmsg.com.ng\/\">Buhari Media Support Group<\/a> (BMSG)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.premiumtimesng.com\/news\/top-news\/239807-alison-maduekes-loot-can-fund-nigeria.html\">proclaimed that the stolen funds<\/a>\u00a0discovered in Madueke\u2019s possession along with her properties worth\u00a0are enough to fund infrastructure development in the country, a key promise the current administration made before it came into power. EFCC boss Ibrahim Magu also claimed the loot\u00a0was the tip of the iceberg, and that his agency will discover more, \u201crecover every loot linked to her\u201d and \u201cget other people she\u2019s work[ed] with\u201d. But the media and the Nigerian corruption agency still seem to be losing sight of the goal, which is to end corruption, not to hound the former oil-minister who hasn\u2019t been found guilty in court yet.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria still remains ranked at 136 out of 176 countries according to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corruption_Perceptions_Index\">Transparency International\u2019s Global Index of Corruption Perception<\/a>. Before Diezani, there was General <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sani_Abacha\">Sanni Abacha<\/a>, a man who before present evidence was thought to be the most corrupt Nigerian leader ever. Then there was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Ibori\">James Ibori<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diepreye_Alamieyeseigha\">Diepriye Alamieyeseigha<\/a>; two oil-rich <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_South_(Nigeria)\">South-South Nigerian<\/a> leaders who robbed their people blind but\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/venturesafrica.com\/celebrating-the-release-of-ibori-if-our-best-leader-is-a-convicted-criminal-then-surely-change-in-nigeria-is-sheer-fantasy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are still seen as heroes in some quarters<\/a>. Then to a lesser extent, there are the ministers and former presidents who in common parlance are referred to as \u201cthe cabal.\u201d Madueke\u2019s media trial is the poster child, the one that seems to show that President Buhari is really fighting corruption. With the ease through which EFCC has been able to find evidence\u00a0of her corrupt activities as head of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nigerian_National_Petroleum_Corporation\">NNPC<\/a>, there are indications there was some degree of diligence in their investigations, and the agency could secure a conviction this time.<\/p>\n<p>And that is probably why EFCC\u2019s investigative job is bigger than grand gestures of unveiling corrupt criminals; it should create a template for checking the systems in the NNPC and in the public service that massively aid corruption. There is a general perception that strong leadership in Nigeria, and probably in Africa, is better than working political institutions that have inbuilt \u201cfirewall\u201d systems guarding against the influence of political elites and parties. That is wrong. A leader is only as strong as the power the political institutions present in his government give him.<\/p>\n<p>Agencies like the EFCC, through its investigations, should have reports\u00a0to show how these government monies move from within the government coffers and public institutions into the hands of private individuals with relative ease, without raising flags. National corporations like NNPC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbn.gov.ng\/\">CBN<\/a>, etc. will need to be torn down, and rebuilt from the scratch, or things will remain the same and people like Diezani will always find a way to cash out.<\/p>\n<p>With the help of popular youth socialist movements across the nation and their agitations on the political system, the power of social media, and a well-informed populace interested in political participation, Nigeria\u2019s anti-corruption agencies could put a stop to corruption from its roots. Media trials and sensationalism only gloss over the facts regarding corruption.<\/p>\n<p>We mourn, we get angry, we grieve, basically pass through all the 7 stages of grief and promptly move on until the next \u201cwe\u2019ve discovered corrupt persons\u201d news is announced in the media, sometimes to cover up another \u201cwe\u2019ve discovered corrupt persons\u201d news involving someone close to the currently ruling elite. If EFCC seeks approval, it might not get it.
