{"id":3539,"date":"2017-08-24T15:44:27","date_gmt":"2017-08-24T12:44:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=3539"},"modified":"2017-08-25T18:55:15","modified_gmt":"2017-08-25T15:55:15","slug":"vlasti-brazilii-operaciya-avtomojka-ne-poshhadit-zarubezhnye-kompanii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/vlasti-brazilii-operaciya-avtomojka-ne-poshhadit-zarubezhnye-kompanii\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil: Operation Car Wash Widens to Include US &#038; Greek Firms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/6887-brazil-operation-car-wash-widens-to-include-us-greek-firms\">OCCRP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brazilian authorities expanded Friday their mammoth corruption investigation, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Car_Wash\">Operation Car Wash<\/a>, to include at least five Greek shipping companies, a US asphalt firm and a Brazilian ex-congressman.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;These operations leave a clear message: foreign firms will not be spared by Car Wash,&#8221; Prosecutor <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Athayde_Ribeiro_Costa\">Athayde Ribeiro Costa<\/a> said, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/politica.estadao.com.br\/blogs\/fausto-macedo\/recado-as-estrangeiras\/\">O Estad\u00e3o<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The two new probes are the 43rd and 44th phases of the investigation that began over three years ago into a bribes for government contracts scandal involving Brazil\u2019s state oil firm <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petrobras\">Petrobras<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/veja.abril.com.br\/politica\/ex-deputado-candido-vaccarezza-e-preso-na-lava-jato\/\">Veja<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors accuse Florida-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/snapshot.asp?privcapId=6891626\">Sargeant Marine<\/a>, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/valtasphalt.com\/\">world\u2019s largest<\/a> asphalt trading, storage and transportation business, of paying former Brazilian lawmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C3%A2ndido_Vaccarezza\">C\u00e2ndido Vaccarezza<\/a> nearly US$ 500,000 in bribes to help it win asphalt supply contracts from Petrobras,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-corruption-idUSKCN1AY137\">Reuters<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Vaccerezza\u2019s influence, the US firm signed 12 contracts with Petrobras worth approximately US$ 180 million between 2010 and 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Vaccarezza was a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Workers%27_Party_(Brazil)\">Workers\u2019 Party<\/a> leader of the House in the governments of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luiz_In%C3%A1cio_Lula_da_Silva\">Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dilma_Rousseff\">Dilma Rousseff<\/a>. Both are currently serving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/6713-brazil-s-ex-president-sentenced-to-a-decade-in-prison-for-corruption\">prison sentences<\/a>\u00a0for their involvement in the scheme. Vaccarezza was arrested in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A3o_Paulo\">S\u00e3o Paolo<\/a>, according to Veja.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities also issued arrest warrants for <a href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paulo_Roberto_Costa\">Paul Roberto Costa<\/a>, Petrobras\u2019 director of supplies, two other ex-managers and an unnamed representative of Sargeant Marine based in Brazil. All four are accused of corruption, money laundering and criminal association, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.estadao.com.br\/\">O Estad\u00e3o<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>In the 43rd phase of the investigation, Brazilian authorities announced they were looking into allegations that six Greek shipping companies paid bribes to Brazilian civil servants, financial operators and politicians in return for Petrobras contracts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br\/politica\/noticia\/2017-08\/lava-jato-moro-proibe-consul-honorario-da-grecia-de-deixar-o-pais\">Konstantinos Kotronakis<\/a>, Greece\u2019s honorary consul in Rio de Janeiro, allegedly paid bribes and provided insider information to help the shipping firms win more than US$ 500 million worth of contracts between 2009 and 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Kotronakis is the director and managing partner of two of the shipping companies, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tsakoshellas.gr\/\">Tsakos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.aegeanair.com\/\">Aegean<\/a> groups, and has indirect ties to three others: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dynacomtm.com\/\">Dynacom Tankers Management<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.galbraiths.co.uk\/home.html\">Galbraiths<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dorianhellas.com\/\">Dorian Hellas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators claim that businessman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jusbrasil.com.br\/topicos\/27788700\/henry-hoyer-de-carvalho\">Henry Hoyer de Carvalho<\/a> acted as the scheme\u2019s intermediary. He was allegeldy funnelling the bribes through offshores registered by third parties including Kotronakis\u2019 son, <a href=\"https:\/\/companycheck.co.uk\/director\/915449432\/MR-GEORGIOS-KOTRONAKIS\/summary\">Georgios<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontlinedefenders.org\/en\/case\/case-history-luaty-beirao\">De Carvalho<\/a> was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/politica.estadao.com.br\/noticias\/geral,lava-jato-empresario-hoyer-de-carvalho-obtem-habeas-corpus-e-deixa-prisao,1693016\">arrested in 2015<\/a>\u00a0as part of the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Sargeant Marine and the Greek shipping companies are just six of hundreds of foreign companies that Brazilian prosecutors have identified as making deals with individuals currently under investigation, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, prosecutors also announced their intention to investigate the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-corruption-petrobras-argentina-idUSKCN1AW1MJ\">US$ 892 million sale<\/a>\u00a0of Petrobras\u2019 Argentinian subsidiary.<\/p>\n<p>The latest developments also come less than a month after the arrest of the state oil firm\u2019s CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aldemir_Bendine\">Aldemir Bendin<\/a>, who they claim received\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-brazil-corruption-idUSKBN1AC1J9\">US$ 5.4 million in bribes<\/a>\u00a0from the construction conglomerate <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Odebrecht\">Odebrecht<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: OCCRP.
