These measures ensure there is nowhere for criminals to hide,&#8221; justice minister <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Keenan\">Michael Keenan<\/a> said, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-australia-moneylaundering-idUSKCN1AX06N?il=0\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes just days after Austrac accused the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commonwealth_Bank\">Commonwealth Bank of Australia<\/a> (CBA) of &#8220;serious and systematic&#8221; breaching of the country\u2019s anti-money laundering and counter terrorism financing laws.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/6808-australia-s-biggest-mortgage-lender-accused-of-money-laundering-breaches?src=ilaw\">Earlier this month<\/a>, the agency accused CBA of failing to comply with its obligations to monitor transactions on 778,370 of its accounts, and of turning a blind eye to drug syndicates using the bank\u2019s deposit machines to launder tens of millions of dollars in profit.<\/p>\n<p>Between November 2012 and September 2015, CBA allegedly failed to report 53,506 transaction alerts to the agency, which totalled more than AUS$ 77 million (US$ 61 million), according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/national-affairs\/national-security\/keenan-tightens-laws-on-moneylaundering-and-terror-financing\/news-story\/b249b71ccaae5e3aa9f4f3eddb025ebf\">Australian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The new bill will also increase the search and seizure powers of police officers and customs officials at Australia\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, after a review deemed the risk of money laundering at locations such as ATMs and large retailers almost negligible, the physical transfer of money in cash and credit cards within the country\u2019s borders at such locations will be deregulated.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is the second country to start regulating cryptocurrencies, after Japan introduced new laws earlier this year, the Financial Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>According to Tokyo\u2019s new rules, any &#8220;alternative coin&#8221; exchange or money transfer business wishing to operate must come under the regulatory supervision of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Financial_Services_Agency\">Japan Financial Services Agency<\/a>. They must also comply with &#8220;know your customer&#8221; anti-money laundering regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s recognition and regulation of bitcoin came after the world\u2019s largest virtual currency exchange, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mt._Gox\">Mt Gox<\/a>, filed for bankruptcy in 2014. Around 850,000 bitcoins &#8211; worth almost US$ 3.5 billion today &#8211; disappeared in a hack before its collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the US indicted a Russian man named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/6776-us-indicts-russian-suspected-of-laundering-us-4-billion-for-criminals\">Alexander Vinnik<\/a>\u00a0for laundering more than US$ 4 billion for criminals through his cryptocurrency exchanges. He was also charged with laundering the funds stolen from Mt Gox through his own exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s move to do the same is just the first phase in overhauling its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.au\/Details\/C2017C00188\">Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act<\/a>. The second phase will extend the rules to lawyers, accountants, real estate agencies and dealers in high-value goods, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reuters\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: OCCRP.
