{"id":3700,"date":"2017-08-29T17:31:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-29T14:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=3700"},"modified":"2017-08-30T18:34:34","modified_gmt":"2017-08-30T15:34:34","slug":"outa-charges-eskoms-anoj-singh-for-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/outa-charges-eskoms-anoj-singh-for-corruption\/","title":{"rendered":"OUTA Charges Eskom&#8217;s Anoj Singh For Corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.za\/2017\/08\/29\/outa-charges-eskoms-anoj-singh-for-corruption_a_23189230\/\">Huffington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"headline__subtitle\"><strong>\u201cAnoj Singh has been invaluable for the Gupta empire and has bent over backwards to pave the way for lucrative deals.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outa.co.za\/\">Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse<\/a> (OUTA) has laid charges of corruption and financial misconduct against <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eskom\">Eskom<\/a>&#8216;s suspended Chief Financial Officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/person.asp?personId=98579105&amp;privcapId=875739\">Anoj Singh<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The charges arise from the investigation by advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/capebar.co.za\/advocates\/budlender-sc-geoff\/\">Geoff Budlender<\/a> who was appointed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tokyo_Sexwale\">Tokyo Sexwale<\/a>, the then Chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trillian.im\/\">Trillian business group<\/a>, to investigate the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gupta_family\">Gupta<\/a>-related company over allegations of its use of inside political knowledge for commercial gain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anoj Singh has been invaluable for the Gupta empire and has bent over backwards to pave the way for lucrative deals,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DEsvjAGVte0\">Ben Theron<\/a>, OUTA&#8217;s Chief Operating Officer.<\/p>\n<p>An affidavit by advocate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news24.com\/SouthAfrica\/News\/outa-lays-treason-charges-against-faith-muthambi-20170717\">Stefanie Fick<\/a>, OUTA&#8217;s Head of Legal Affairs, outlining the case against Singh was handed to the police on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesslive.co.za\/bd\/companies\/2017-06-29-read-in-full-geoff-budlenders-report-on-trillian-capital\/\">Budlender report<\/a> and the emails (leaked emails from within the Gupta business empire) contain evidence of conduct by Singh that indicates corruption and breaches of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treasury.gov.za\/legislation\/PFMA\/act.pdf\">Public Finance Management Act<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cipc.co.za\/files\/2413\/9452\/7679\/CompaniesAct71_2008.pdf\">Companies Act<\/a>,&#8221; said Fick.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is also apparent from the Budlender report that there has to be a full-scale investigation into Eskom and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transnet.net\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">Transnet<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday, OUTA makes reference to media reports which accuse Singh of authorising various payments from Eskom to benefit Gupta businesses; in return, he allegedly benefitted from Gupta-funded trips to Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Singh authorised a R1.6 billion guarantee by Eskom to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.absa.co.za\/personal\/\">Absa bank<\/a>, used by the Guptas to buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/snapshot.asp?privcapId=90664358\">Optimum Coal Holdings<\/a> in December 2015,&#8221; OUTA said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Budlender investigation notes that Singh authorised at least three substantial payments totalling R266 million to Trillian in April and August 2016 which did not go through Eskom&#8217;s books; a fourth payment in December 2016 was later reported on by <a href=\"http:\/\/amabhungane.co.za\/\">AmaBhungane<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Alliance_(South_Africa)\">Democratic Alliance<\/a> also filed charges against Singh on Friday last week.<\/p>\n<p>DA public enterprises spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natasha_Mazzone\">Natasha Mazzone<\/a> said the charges were based on Singh&#8217;s alleged role in a range of corruption scandals at the power utility.<\/p>\n<p>Singh has been on special leave since 27 July pending an investigation at Eskom, where he has been CFO since 25 September 2015 and acting CFO since 1 August 2015.
