Prospective SABC<\/a> board member Nomvuyiso Batyi<\/a> has been accused of \u201ccorruption\u201d for not reporting former communications minister Faith Muthambi<\/a> to the police for trying to \u201cunduly influence\u201d her.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The accusation was levelled against Batyi during interviews for the SABC board in parliament on Thursday.<\/p>\n

MPs grilled Batyi\u201a an Independent Communications Authority of South Africa<\/a> (Icasa<\/a>) councillor\u201a on why she didn\u2019t report Muthambi after she allegedly offered her the position of Icasa chairperson in return for giving the Gupta family<\/a> a TV broadcasting licence.<\/p>\n

MPs interviewed another 12 candidates on Thursday during the second day of interviews.<\/p>\n

\u201cI put it to you that you believe in corruption. Unless you prove to me\u201a you give me the antithesis\u201a I will remain in that kind of belief\u201a\u201d said Cope MP Willie Madisha<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Madisha referred to a Sunday Times report which alleged that Muthambi \u201cattempted to unduly influence\u201d Batyi by offering her the position of chairperson of Icasa \u201cin return for you giving a TV broadcasting licence to a Gupta-owned broadcasting company\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs this correct? It was put that you threatened the minister when that whole thing (chairperson appointment) was not implemented. Why didn\u2019t you go to the police to report that whole thing? For you not having done both\u201a then that is corruption. The fact that you did not act\u201a that to me is a major problem\u201a\u201d said Madisha.<\/p>\n

DA MP Gavin Davis<\/a> asked how Batyi expects to be trusted to report matters of political interference should she be appointed to the SABC board.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven your track record how can we expect you as an SABC board member to stand up to political interference and corruption?\u201d asked Davis.<\/p>\n

Batyi rebutted the claims saying she took legal steps against Muthambi but had to abandon them because it was too costly.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot at any point did I threaten the minister. However I had instituted legal proceedings against the minister\u201a which I abandoned. There was no need for me to go to the police because there was no fraud that had happened. And lastly\u201a at the end of it all\u201a no one was licensed during that round (of applications). I\u2019ve never been corrupt and will never be corrupt. I hold myself very highly\u201a\u201d said Batyi.<\/p>\n

Batyi said there were certain changes which made her decide to abandon the matter. \u201cIf that is a measure of what makes a person corrupt\u201a the definition that is used by this committee\u201a so be it I am corrupt. Thank you\u201a\u201d said a clearly annoyed Batyi.<\/p>\n

MPs also heard how former SABC executive Hlaudi Motsoeneng<\/a>\u2019s appointment saw former board member Rachel Kalidass<\/a> falling out of favour with Muthambi\u201a leading to her \u201cillegal\u201d removal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m one of the former SABC board members that was unlawfully removed using the Companies Act<\/a> previously\u201a\u201d said Kalidass.<\/p>\n

She said her removal was as a result of objecting to certain decisions\u201a like Motsoeneng\u2019s appointment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese strategic decisions saw us come out of favour with number of board members and the minister. I was dissenting continuously on those decisions\u201a\u201d said Kalidass.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
