{"id":4055,"date":"2017-09-07T19:09:15","date_gmt":"2017-09-07T16:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=4055"},"modified":"2017-09-08T12:49:47","modified_gmt":"2017-09-08T09:49:47","slug":"prezidentu-gvatemaly-grozit-impichment-za-nelegalnoe-finansirovanie-predvybornoj-kampanii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/prezidentu-gvatemaly-grozit-impichment-za-nelegalnoe-finansirovanie-predvybornoj-kampanii\/","title":{"rendered":"Guatemalan President is Facing Impeachment for Illegal Political Financing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/6946-guatemalan-president-is-facing-impeachment-for-illegal-political-financing\">OCCRP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guatemala\u2019s Supreme Court on Monday ordered Congress to consider lifting President <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jimmy_Morales\">Jimmy Morales<\/a>\u2019 immunity from prosecution after evidence emerged that his campaign received illegal financing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Morales, a former comedian and Guatemalan President since 2016, was accused by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Commission_against_Impunity_in_Guatemala\">International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/undpa\/en\/americas\/cicig\">CICIG<\/a>) of secretly receiving US$ 825,000 for his 2015 campaign, according to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/09\/guatemala-request-lift-morales-immunity-proceed-170904215031343.html\">Al Jazeera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In response, Morales tried to expel the head of the Commission, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iv%C3%A1n_Vel%C3%A1squez_G%C3%B3mez\">Ivan Velasquez<\/a>, from the country.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While Morales publicly stood in solidarity with Velasquez and the CICIG during his presidential campaign, he immediately rescinded his allegiance toward the organization once it started building a corruption case against him.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After threatening Morales with impeachment, the CICIG started building another corruption case against Morales&#8217; son and brother. The CICIG&#8217;s decision to persistently investigate the Morales family and their dubious monetary involvements is what led Morales to call for Velasquez&#8217; expulsion from the country.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Civil society and Guatemalan courts are fighting Morales&#8217; decision to get rid of Velasquez and have temporarily lifted Velasquez&#8217; expulsion order.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Velasquez \u201cmeddled in domestic affairs that are the sole responsibility of the Guatemalan state,&#8221; Morales said in defense of his decision to declare Velasquez a &#8220;persona non grata&#8221; in Guatemala, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-41078567\">BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The CIDIG was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jurist.org\/paperchase\/2017\/09\/guatemala-top-court-sends-legislators-request-to-lift-presidents-immunity.php\">established<\/a>\u00a0after ex-president <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otto_P%C3%A9rez_Molina\">Otto Perez Molina<\/a> and ex-vice president <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roxana_Baldetti\">Roxana Baldelti<\/a> were caught in a high-profile corruption scandal in 2015.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">From its inception, the CICIG has successfully exposed the country&#8217;s political and business elite involved in clandestine transactions. Over 100 former Guatemalan cabinet members are currently facing trial thanks to the organization&#8217;s efforts.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;As the head of the UN&#8217;s International Commission Against impunity, Velasquez is an essential voice in calls against corruption,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nikki_Haley\">Nikki Haley<\/a>, US ambassador to the United Nations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: OCCRP.
