{"id":4435,"date":"2017-09-19T12:48:24","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T09:48:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=4435"},"modified":"2017-09-20T17:30:17","modified_gmt":"2017-09-20T14:30:17","slug":"syn-byvshego-prezidenta-gondurasa-prigovoren-v-ssha-k-24-godam-tyurmy-za-torgovlyu-narkotikami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/syn-byvshego-prezidenta-gondurasa-prigovoren-v-ssha-k-24-godam-tyurmy-za-torgovlyu-narkotikami\/","title":{"rendered":"Son of Ex-Honduran President Sentenced to 24 Years in US Prison for Drug Trafficking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/6960-son-of-ex-honduran-president-sentenced-to-24-years-in-us-prison-for-drug-trafficking\">OCCRP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The son of former Honduran President <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porfirio_Lobo_Sosa\">Porfirio Lobo<\/a> was sentenced to 24 years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to drug trafficking charges, the\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/son-former-president-honduras-pleads-guilty-manhattan-federal-court-conspiring-import\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Department of Justice<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fabio_Lobo\">Fabio Lobo<\/a>, 44, admitted to conspiring to import multiple kilograms of cocaine into the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lobo helped in 2014 two <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drug_Enforcement_Administration\">Drug Enforcement Administration<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/index.shtml\">DEA<\/a>) agents who were posing as Mexican drug traffickers transport cocaine to the US via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Honduras\">Honduras<\/a>, according to the indictment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Prosecutors said that Lobo intended to profit from facilitating drug trafficking through Honduras, which has long served as a transshipment point for US bound cocaine smuggled out of South America,\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-honduras-drugs\/son-of-ex-honduran-president-gets-24-years-for-u-s-drug-charge-idUSKCN1BG393\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI want to apologize to the government of the United States,\u201d he said tearfully before his sentencing. \u201cI apologize to the people of Honduras, to my mother and especially to my father, who has nothing to do with this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cachiros\">Leonel Rivera Maradiaga<\/a>, the former leader of a Honduran drug trafficking organization who is now cooperating with prosecutors, testified at a hearing in March that he bribed Lobo and his father for favorable treatment, court documents show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lobo\u2019s father was elected president of Honduras in 2009 after a military coup ousted then President <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manuel_Zelaya\">Manuel Zelaya<\/a>. He left office in January 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">US Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joon_H._Kim\">Joon H. Kim<\/a> said that Lobo used his father\u2019s position and his own connections to bring drug traffickers together with corrupt police and government officials, according to\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.insightcrime.org\/news-briefs\/honduras-ex-president-son-sentenced-24-years-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insight Crime<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhether you are a street-level dealer, a member of a cartel, or the son of a former foreign president, drug dealing is drug dealing,\u201d Kim said. \u201cIt is a serious federal crime for which you will be prosecuted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Lobo pleaded guilty in May 2016, about a year after he was arrested in Haiti by the DEA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">He is the latest prominent Honduran to be charged in the US with drug related crimes. Members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.envio.org.ni\/articulo\/5115\">Rosenthal clan<\/a> including political juggernaut <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jaime_Rosenthal\">Jaime Rosenthal Oliva<\/a>, his son <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yani_Rosenthal\">Yani Rosenthal<\/a>, his nephew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-08-29\/former-honduran-minister-admits-to-u-s-money-laundering-charge\">Yankel Rosenthal<\/a>, and one of their family lawyers were all accused by US prosecutors of money laundering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Yani and Yankel both pleaded guilty to the charges this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: OCCRP.
