Speaking in the north-central Italian town of Cesena<\/a> on Sunday, Pope Francis<\/a> outlined his own version of “Profiles in Courage<\/a>,” outlining what he sees as the core of virtuous politics: A kind of politics that\u2019s \u201cneither a servant nor an owner, but a friend and collaborator \u2026 neither fearful nor reckless, but responsible and therefore courageous and prudent at the same time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

ROME – Pope Francis on Sunday blasted corruption as the \u201ctermite of politics\u201d because it doesn\u2019t permit a society to grow, and described every good politician as a kind of \u201cmartyr\u201d to service because he or she must be willing to set aside their own ideas and desires to seek the common good.<\/p>\n

A good form of politics, the pope said, is \u201cnot subservient to individual ambitions or powerful factions and centers of interests,\u201d drawing strong applause from a crowd in the central square of the Italian town of Cesena, where the pontiff was making a brief pastoral visit.<\/p>\n

Francis called for a kind of politics that\u2019s \u201cneither a servant nor an owner, but a friend and collaborator \u2026 neither fearful nor reckless, but responsible and therefore courageous and prudent at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pope\u2019s remarks came in what was billed as a \u201cmeeting with citizenship,\u201d which basically meant the population of Cesena, a city of about 97,000 people in Italy\u2019s north-central Emilia-Romagna region<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Good politics, the pope continued, \u201cencourages involvement of people, their progressive inclusion and participation.\u201d It doesn\u2019t leave anyone at the margins, he said.<\/p>\n

A pope known for his environmental leadership, including publishing the first-ever encyclical letter devoted to the care of creation in\u00a0Laudato\u2019 Si<\/a>, also added a \u201cgreen\u201d note to his profile of good politics.<\/p>\n

Such a form of politics, he said, \u201cdoesn\u2019t plunder and pollute natural resources, which aren\u2019t a bottomless well but a treasure given to us by God to use with respect and intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Francis called all this the \u201cauthentic face\u201d of politics, and said it\u2019s the reason that the social doctrine of the Catholic Church considers politics \u201ca noble form of charity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cesena\u2019s\u00a0Piazza del Popolo<\/a>, or \u201cSquare of the People,\u201d was jam-packed for the pope\u2019s brief stop in the city Sunday morning, lasting about an hour and a half before Francis moved on to the larger nearby city of Bologna<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Francis drew his strongest applause from the enthusiastic crowd when he called on politicians to purse the common good and to reject \u201ceven the most minimal form of corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frustration with corruption scandals is a common theme of Italian political life, recently inspiring the populist\u00a0Cinque Stelle<\/a>, or \u201cFive Star<\/a>\u201d movement to shake up the country\u2019s political establishment – only to see some of its anti-establishment leaders become embroiled in corruption scandals of their own after taking public office, including, at the moment, the Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Frequently veering off-script, Francis added an impromptu reflection on corruption Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cCorruption is the collapse of politics, because it doesn\u2019t allow the society to grow,\u201d he said. \u201cA good politician always ends up as a sort of martyr, because he or she must let their own ideas and desires go in order to seek the common good.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official purpose for Francis\u2019s brief stop in Cesena was to recall the 300th\u00a0<\/sup>anniversary of the birth of Pope Pius VI<\/a>, an 18th<\/sup>\u00a0century figure who condemned the French Revolution<\/a>. When he refused to renounce his temporal power, Pius was arrested and taken into exile in France, where he died in August 1799.<\/p>\n

After his session in Cesena\u2019s main square, he headed to the local cathedral for a session not just with priests, religious and seminarians, but also lay members of pastoral councils and representatives of parishes.<\/p>\n

In addition to a more spiritual reflection on evangelization and a \u201crevolution of tenderness,\u201d the pontiff also offered some practical pastoral advice – including that while it\u2019s fine to talk out disagreements, he said, one thing is out of bounds: \u201cNever gossip! Never gossip!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGossip is a terrorist act \u2026 it destroys communities,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a bomb that destroys you and the people around you.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Bologna, Francis is scheduled to meet with immigrants, workers, university students and faculty, and a group of priests, religious and seminarians before saying a farewell Mass in the evening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
