In the U.S., Vinnik could face up to 55 years in prison. Vinnik\u2019s lawyers immediately acted upon his right to appeal to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supreme_Civil_and_Criminal_Court_of_Greece\">Greece\u2019s Supreme Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The United States first indicted Vinnik on July 26 for, \u201cfor operating an unlicensed money service business, money laundering, and related crimes,\u201d according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ndca\/pr\/russian-national-and-bitcoin-exchange-charged-21-count-indictment-operating-alleged\">Department of Justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThrough his actions, it is alleged that he stole identities, facilitated drug trafficking, and helped to launder criminal proceeds from syndicates around the world,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/compliance\/criminal-investigation\/criminal-enforcement\">IRS Criminal Investigation<\/a> Chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/forbes\/welcome\/?toURL=https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kellyphillipserb\/2017\/08\/04\/irs-introduces-new-crime-boss\/&amp;refURL=https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/&amp;referrer=https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/\">Don Fort<\/a> in the DOJ statement. A U.S. warrant lead to his July 25th arrest while he was on vacation in Greece.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Vinnik allegedly operated the digital currency exchange <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BTC-e\">BTC-e<\/a>, connected to the laundering of more than US$ 4 billion for individuals involved in criminal activity. U.S. authorities also accuse him of laundering funds obtained from the 2014 collapse of the Japan-based exchange\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/6776-us-indicts-russian-suspected-of-laundering-us-4-billion-for-criminals\">Mt. Gox.<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The investigation of Vinnik\u2019s case comes at a time when dialogues over cryptocurrency are conflicting and rampant. In September, the Chinese government made moves to stifle bitcoin trade, while Japan authorities encouraged cryptocurrency activity by giving licenses to 11 new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/01\/technology\/bitcoin-japan-south-korea.html\">exchanges<\/a>. In the United States, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/investor.gov\/additional-resources\/news-alerts\/alerts-bulletins\/investor-bulletin-initial-coin-offerings\">Securities and Exchange Commission<\/a>\u00a0warned investors in July of the risk of being exposed to fraud when using cryptocurrency for crowdfunding.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Wednesday, Vinnik told judges, \u201cI have nothing to do with what I am accused of,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/greece-backs-extradition-of-russian-to-us-over-bitcoin-fraud\/2017\/10\/04\/72bcea06-a8d5-11e7-9a98-07140d2eed02_story.html?utm_term=.5a0a003881bd\">The Washington Post<\/a> reported.
