Deposed president speaks out as defence team resigns in protest at her treatment, and international lawyers appeal to UN.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Park Geun-hye<\/a>, the deposed South Korean president, has denounced her bribery and corruption trial as \u201cpolitical revenge\u201d after her entire legal team resigned in protest against her treatment in detention.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking publicly for the first time\u00a0since her trial began six months ago<\/a>, Park told a hearing at the Seoul central district court on Monday:\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cI was supposed to be released today, but the court issued another arrest warrant \u2026 I can\u2019t accept its decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

Late last week the court extended her detention until April next year, citing a potential risk that she would attempt to destroy evidence. Her first six-month period of detention expired on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy lawyers and I felt helpless,\u201d Park said, according to the Korea Times<\/a>. \u201cI have lost faith that the court will do a fair job in accordance with the constitution and conscience.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an outburst that appeared to be directed at her successor as South Korean president,\u00a0Moon Jae-in<\/a>, Park claimed her treatment was politically motivated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope I will be the last victim of political revenge in the name of the rule of law,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Calls for Park\u2019s release are building after international lawyers acting for the former president approached the UN in an attempt to secure her release from \u201cinhuman and degrading\u201d detention to undergo urgent medical treatment.<\/p>\n

A legal team led by Rodney Dixon<\/a> QC said they were \u201cdismayed\u201d by the court\u2019s decision to extend Park\u2019s detention by a further six months.<\/p>\n

Park, who was arrested soon after her\u00a0impeachment in March<\/a>, faces a possible\u00a0life sentence<\/a>\u00a0if found guilty of bribery \u2013 the most serious charge \u2013 in a case that has also ensnared the heir to the\u00a0Samsung<\/a>\u00a0technology empire and dozens of senior politicians and business figures.<\/p>\n

The former dictator\u2019s daughter, who was elected\u00a0South Korea\u2019s first female president<\/a>\u00a0in 2012, is accused of colluding with her close friend,\u00a0Choi Soon-sil<\/a>, to secure tens of millions of dollars in bribes from businesses in return for political favours.<\/p>\n

Lee Jae-yong<\/a>, the acting chairman of Samsung<\/a>,\u00a0was sentenced to five years in prison in August<\/a>\u00a0after being found guilty of bribery, embezzlement and other crimes. He is appealing against the verdict, claiming that Park coerced him into helping Choi.<\/p>\n

A pale-looking Park, who arrived at the court on Monday in handcuffs, insisted she was innocent.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never accepted or granted requests for favours while in office,\u201d she said. \u201cI believe it has been fully revealed during the course of the trial that the corresponding suspicions are not true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Park said the last six months had been \u201ca horrible and miserable time\u201d during which she had \u201cendured pain in my body and mind\u201d.<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cI had trust in a person who later betrayed me. As a result, I have lost my honour and everything else in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her international legal team \u2013 which is separate from the defence lawyers who have been representing her in her corruption trial \u2013 has asked the UN working group on arbitrary detention<\/a> to recommend that she be granted a conditional release, although the ultimate decision rests with the South Korean courts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UN is looking at our application urgently and the\u00a0South Korean<\/a>\u00a0authorities need to respond,\u201d Dixon told the Guardian. \u201cWe have asked the UN to address the matter as swiftly as possible because every day counts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Park, 65, suffers from chronic lower back pain, osteoarthritis in her knee and shoulder joints, and Addison\u2019s disease<\/a>, a rare disorder of the adrenal glands.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur point that we\u2019ve been highlighting to the UN is that her condition has certainly been\u00a0aggravated by being in detention<\/a>\u00a0and that if she doesn\u2019t get proper medical attention it\u2019ll only get worse,\u201d said Dixon, a human rights lawyer based in London.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you could release her you could have very clear conditions in place \u2013 you could even put her under house arrest \u2013 and her health conditions could be treated.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a submission to the UN, the lawyers said Park\u2019s ongoing detention, despite her deteriorating health, \u201cconstituted a violation of her fundamental human rights, including her right against arbitrary detention, her right against inhuman and degrading treatment, and her right to a fair trial\u201d.<\/p>\n

They added that it was a matter of \u201cextreme concern\u201d that South Korean courts had turned down her repeated requests to be released during the trial, even after she collapsed during a hearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur biggest fear is that she will have a complete breakdown, and that is why we are urging an intervention now so that she doesn\u2019t get into the position where it becomes completely intolerable,\u201d Dixon said.<\/p>\n

The resignation of Park\u2019s seven-member defence team means the trial cannot continue until replacement state lawyers have been appointed. The interruption could cause a long delay in the trial, since they will have to review more than 100,000 pages of evidence.<\/p>\n

Her lawyers said the decision to extend her detention was proof that the principle of the presumption of innocence was collapsing, according to Yonhap<\/a> news agency.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we\u2019ve reached a conclusion that any defence argument for the defendant is meaningless, all of us decided to resign,\u201d one of her lawyers, Yoo Yeong-ha<\/a>, told the court.<\/p>\n

Health concerns aside, Park\u2019s international lawyers claimed that her \u201cinhuman and degrading\u201d detention includes sleep deprivation, abusive and coercive interrogations, and excessively rough treatment that has left her with bruises from handcuffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is internationally accepted that detention is the exception under international human rights standards, and is only justified in exceptional circumstances,\u201d they said. \u201cNone of these pertain in the present case, which does not concern violent crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
