The probes have been sending shock waves in Brazil \u2013 and are still going. CGTN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/america.cgtn.com\/anchors-corresp\/paulo-cabral\">Paulo Cabral<\/a> reports.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"710\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gTXy4awxwjk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Just recently, a Chinese-led consortium announced its interest in completing line six of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A3o_Paulo_Metro\">S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s Metro System<\/a>. In 2015, construction began on the project but last year, it was stopped after the original contractors got entangled in corruption allegations.<\/p>\n<p>The group includes the country\u2019s biggest construction company \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Odebrecht\">Odebrecht<\/a> \u2013 whose former CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marcelo_Odebrecht\">Marcelo Odebrecht<\/a>, has been in jail for over two years \u2013 serving a 19- year sentence for paying bribes.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last few years, corruption probes in Brazil, especially the landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Car_Wash\">Car Wash<\/a> probe into illegal dealings involving oil giant <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petrobras\">Petrobras<\/a> \u2013 have had deep impacts in the country\u2019s business community, political establishment and the economy. As investigations continue, it\u2019s unclear what else may be revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, the congress is looking into charges against president <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michel_Temer\">Michel Temer<\/a> despite <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chamber_of_Deputies_(Brazil)\">Brazil\u2019s Chamber of Deputies<\/a> report to the lower house of parliament that recommended rejecting the charges of obstruction.<\/p>\n<p>Former president, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luiz_In%C3%A1cio_Lula_da_Silva\">Lula da Silva<\/a>, who was sentenced to nine years and six months over allegations of corruption linked to the Car Wash probe, is leading in the polls in the upcoming 2018 Presidential elections.<\/p>\n<p>There is widespread perception in Brazil that politicians have been trying to slow down investigations.<\/p>\n<p>But one analyst says their capacity to do so is limited because of the relative independence of federal police, prosecutors and controllers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can have a will of the government in terms of stopping those investigations but on the other side you have the force from the internal corporations in charge of the investigation that can try to prevent these actions. It\u2019s a track that we have pursued and not sure we can reverse this path of continuing the investigations. The population would not allow it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insper.edu.br\/en\/faculty\/professors-dedicated-exclusively\/sandro-cabral\/\">Sandro Cabral<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insper.edu.br\/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsJyxycf_1gIVE1QYCh04LgVPEAAYASAAEgL_d_D_BwE\">Strategy Expert<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Insper\">INSPER<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>As investigations progress, there\u2019s also concern with the impacts on the economy, as some of the country\u2019s biggest companies have been hit.<\/p>\n<p>This professor says the corruption probes are one reason behind a drop in the level of investment in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the Car Wash, we would have better prospects in the short term to grow but in the long-term we would be stuck in problems related to corruption. The best scenario we would get rid of corruption and Brazil would develop a new judicial system and new institutions that would foster investment,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/eesp.fgv.br\/professores\/leonardo-weller\">Leonardo Weller<\/a>, Economy Professor, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Funda%C3%A7%C3%A3o_Get%C3%BAlio_Vargas\">Getulio Vargas Foundation<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>Some Brazilians seem to believe battling corruption is paramount for the country\u2019s long-term development\u2026 even if it increases Brazil\u2019s hardships for now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: CGTN.
