{"id":5567,"date":"2017-10-23T19:38:57","date_gmt":"2017-10-23T16:38:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=5567"},"modified":"2017-10-25T18:45:43","modified_gmt":"2017-10-25T15:45:43","slug":"sudanskogo-glavreda-posadili-za-antikorrupcionnoe-rassledovanie-deyatelnosti-prezidenta-bashira","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/sudanskogo-glavreda-posadili-za-antikorrupcionnoe-rassledovanie-deyatelnosti-prezidenta-bashira\/","title":{"rendered":"Sudan editor convicted over President Bashir corruption story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newvision.co.ug\/new_vision\/news\/1464209\/sudan-editor-convicted-president-bashir-corruption-story\">New Vision<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sudantribune.com\/spip.php?mot819\">Osman Mirghani<\/a> has been sentenced to six months in jail for publishing an article accusing President <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Omar_al-Bashir\">Omar al-Bashir<\/a>&#8216;s family of corruption.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Sudanese court on Monday sentenced a prominent newspaper editor to six months in jail for publishing an article accusing President Omar al-Bashir&#8217;s family of corruption, the journalist told <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agence_France-Presse\">AFP<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The court also handed down a three-year suspended jail term against the writer of the piece which was published in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The court has ordered me to pay 10,000 Sudanese pounds ($1,428) or go to jail for six months,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sudantribune.com\/spip.php?mot819\">Osman Mirghani<\/a>, editor-in-chief of the independent daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tayyar.org\/\">Al-Tayyar<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have decided not to pay the money, and I am waiting for the authorities to take me to jail.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mirghani said that in the article, writer &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mohamed_Zine_El_Abidine\">Mohamed Zine El Abidine<\/a> accused Bashir&#8217;s family of being corrupt&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>After the article was published, Sudan&#8217;s powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Intelligence_and_Security_Service\">National Intelligence and Security Service<\/a> (NISS) filed cases against both Mirghani and El Abidine.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday the court pronounced its sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Mirghani, a US-educated engineer turned journalist, has been regularly targeted for his aggressive style of speaking out against the authorities and over corruption scandals his paper has exposed.<\/p>\n<p>NISS agents often confiscate the entire print runs of editions of Al-Tayyar over articles that they deem inappropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Mirghani was once beaten up by armed men who stormed his office in central <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khartoum\">Khartoum<\/a> in July 2014.<\/p>\n<p>In its 2016 report, media watchdog <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reporters_Without_Borders\">Reporters Without Borders<\/a> (RSF) ranked Sudan near the bottom of a world press freedom index, saying that the NISS &#8220;hounds journalists and censors the print media&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: New Vision.
