(Reuters) &#8211; Former <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philadelphia\">Philadelphia<\/a> District Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R._Seth_Williams\">R. Seth Williams<\/a> was sentenced\u00a0on Tuesday to five years in federal prison for taking bribes and committing fraud to maintain a lifestyle prosecutors said he could not afford.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"43\"><strong>Williams, 50, the first African-American elected as district attorney in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pennsylvania\">Pennsylvania<\/a>, had gone on trial before Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_S._Diamond\">Paul Diamond<\/a> in June but entered a guilty plea to one count of bribery and resigned before the trial concluded in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The two-term Democrat had been in office since 2010.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"46\">\u201cMr. Williams, you sold yourself to the parasites you surrounded yourself with,\u201d Diamond said at the sentencing, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WHYY-FM\">WHYY Radio<\/a> reported on Twitter. \u201cYou harmed all of the citizens of this city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"47\">Williams, in a letter read in court by his attorney, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.borumburke.com\/profiles.html\">Thomas Burke<\/a>, said he made \u201cmistakes\u201d and acknowledged the hurt he caused his family and the black community, WHYY tweeted.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"48\">Between July 2010 and May 2015, prosecutors said, Williams accepted trips to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominican_Republic\">Dominican Republic<\/a> for himself and his girlfriend, as well as money and luxury personal items, from Philadelphia-area businessman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/philly\/news\/politics\/416873733.html\">Mohammad Ali<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"49\">In return, prosecutors said, Williams took steps including \u201ccontacting a Philadelphia police official in order to pressure and advise the official to assist Ali with security screenings at the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"50\">Ali pleaded guilty in May to bribery and tax evasion.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"51\">In an Oct. 16 sentencing memorandum, prosecutors said that Williams, despite gross annual income topping $200,000, \u201cchose a lifestyle he could not afford.\u201d He faced significant expenses for two mortgages on an expensive home, private-school tuition for his daughters, and alimony to an ex-wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are legal ways to deal with such circumstances,\u201d prosecutors wrote. \u201cWilliams consistently chose the unlawful route, taking whatever opportunity came his way to take more money and other valuable items, both by selling his office and committing fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williams was disbarred by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Supreme_Court_of_Pennsylvania\">Pennsylvania Supreme Court<\/a> on Oct. 19.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: Reuters.
