Politicians and tax authorities from around the world have reacted angrily to the details of the Paradise Papers<\/a>, with some pledging to use details of any press reports as the basis for investigations.<\/p>\n

The UK\u2019s network of\u00a0offshore tax havens<\/a>\u00a0face being blacklisted by the European Union for their role in the behaviour revealed by the Paradise Papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time that we agree and publish a blacklist on tax havens,\u201d Pierre Moscovici<\/a>, the EU tax commissioner,\u00a0told Reuters<\/a>\u00a0on Monday, while commission vice-president Valdis Dombrovskis<\/a> said the revelations \u201cput renewed emphasis on the work \u2026 to fight tax avoidance\u201d.<\/p>\n

Proposals for an EU blacklist of uncooperative tax jurisdictions have been under active discussion for several months, prompted in large part by publication of the\u00a0Panama Papers<\/a>\u00a0last year. Attendees at a meeting with Moscovici staffers two weeks ago were told that it was expected proposals would be published by the end of the year, the Guardian<\/a> understands.<\/p>\n

Canada<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Canadian Revenue Agency<\/a> said it was \u201creviewing links to Canadian entities and will take appropriate action in regards to the Paradise Papers\u201d\u00a0according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation<\/a>. The pledge followed the discovery that Stephen Bronfman<\/a>, a close friend of prime minister Justin Trudeau<\/a>,\u00a0was involved<\/a> in the movement of millions of dollars offshore.<\/p>\n

Trudeau\u2019s office was referring all questions about Bronfman to the headquarters of the Liberal party<\/a>, the CBC<\/a> reported. The party office said that Bronfman was a volunteer who played no role in policy decisions.<\/p>\n

Australia<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Australian Tax Office<\/a>\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0it would use leads from the leak to investigate any non-compliance by Australian individual or corporate taxpayers. \u201cI am confident the ATO is in a position to respond decisively to this data release,\u201d said deputy ATO commissioner Mark Konza<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe data we are receiving from our international and domestic sources is comprehensive and current. This robust intelligence coupled with our powerful analytics capabilities, assists us to continue to tackle tax avoidance head on,\u201d Konza said.<\/p>\n

Germany<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Fabio De Masi<\/a>, a German MP and former vice-president of an EU committee investigating the Panama Papers<\/a> last year, echoed calls for registers of owners of trusts and companies, and called for lawyers and accountants who facilitated serious tax fraud should have their licences to operate revoked. \u201cThe European parliament<\/a> should push for greater investigative competences such as a right to summon witnesses under oath as in the US-Senate and establish a permanent subcommittee on corporate taxation,\u201d De Masi said.<\/p>\n

Indonesia<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The head of the Indonesian tax office\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0it would follow up names released as part of the papers. At least three names, including the two children of former president Suharto<\/a>, appear in the documents.<\/p>\n

India<\/strong><\/h3>\n

India announced that a panel of government officials would be assembled to investigate any leads emerging from the leaks,\u00a0Reuters reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ireland<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Leo Varadkar<\/a>, the Irish taoiseach<\/a>,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0he believed any change in the rules on international corporate taxation should be agreed by the OECD<\/a> and not the EU. The country has been at the centre of several corporate tax avoidance scandals in recent years, including a dispute with the EU over\u00a0alleged illegal state aid<\/a>\u00a0to Apple<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By contrast, the tax haven of Bermuda<\/a> found itself on the defensive after its role in the world of offshore secrecy was exposed by the material. \u201cBermuda is not a place to hide money<\/a>,\u201d said the island\u2019s premier David Burt<\/a>, who insisted he would \u201caggressively\u201d defend the country\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n

Non-governmental organisations reacted with anger to the Paradise Papers. Christian Aid<\/a> said\u00a0revelations<\/a>\u00a0that Glencore<\/a> had loaned millions of dollars to an associate of the Congolese president to finance the acquisition of a mine was proof of the harm facilitated by offshore secrecy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to the Paradise Papers, some of Glencore\u2019s biggest secrets, including the use of off-shore structures are now open to scrutiny,\u201d said Toby Quantrill<\/a>, the group\u2019s head of economic development.<\/p>\n

The anti-corruption group Transparency International said the leaks were proof that oversight of the global financial system was broken. \u201cComplex, cross-border structures are being used to facilitate a wide range of secret activity, which could include corruption, fraud and abusive tax schemes,\u201d said Delia Ferreira Rubio<\/a>, the organisation\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n

Global Witness<\/a> corruption campaign head Murray Worthy<\/a> said the documents \u201chave laid bare the social damage, undue influence and corruption hardwired into our financial system, and the failure of governments around the world to tackle the role of tax havens and the white-collar professionals who facilitate such deals.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
