{"id":5990,"date":"2017-11-08T14:37:20","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T11:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=5990"},"modified":"2017-11-10T17:03:13","modified_gmt":"2017-11-10T14:03:13","slug":"vlasti-francii-nachali-antikorrupcionnuyu-proverku-banka-sosete-zheneral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/vlasti-francii-nachali-antikorrupcionnuyu-proverku-banka-sosete-zheneral\/","title":{"rendered":"SocGen investigated over possible French anti-corruption law breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/11\/07\/socgen-investigated-over-possible-french-anti-corruption-law-breach.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Court_of_Audit_(France)\">French National Financial Prosecutor<\/a>\u00a0requested documents on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_G%C3%A9n%C3%A9rale\">Societe Generale<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0ties with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Libyan_Investment_Authority\">Libyan Investment Authority<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Libya&#8217;s sovereign wealth fund had presented allegations that trades were secured as part of a &#8220;fraudulent and corrupt scheme&#8221; involving the payment of $58.5 million by SocGen to a Panama-registered company<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"inline_quotes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/?symbol=GLE-FR\" data-gdsid=\"32537\" data-inline-quote-symbol=\"GLE-FR\">Societe Generale<\/a>\u00a0said the French financial prosecutor had opened a preliminary investigation into possible violations by the bank of French anti-corruption laws, and had requested documents on its ties with the Libyan Investment Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year Societe Generale agreed to pay nearly 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) to settle a long-running dispute with the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA), avoiding a costly and potentially embarrassing court case.<\/p>\n<p>LIA, Libya&#8217;s sovereign wealth fund, had presented allegations that trades were secured as part of a &#8220;fraudulent and corrupt scheme&#8221; involving the payment of $58.5 million by SocGen to a Panama-registered company.<\/p>\n<p>The bank said in an update to its 2016 annual report published on Monday, that in September and October 2017 it had received judicial requests from the French financial prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Societe Generale also received two judicial requests to produce documents regarding its relations with the LIA in the scope of a preliminary investigation opened by the French National Financial Prosecutor&#8217;s office regarding possible violations of French anticorruption laws,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for SocGen declined to comment further on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>SocGen is also currently in discussions with U.S. authorities in order to reach an agreement to resolve an investigation into potential violations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foreign_Corrupt_Practices_Act\">U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act<\/a>, in connection with certain transactions involving Libyan counterparts, including the Libyan Investment Authority.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any such agreement would include a requirement that Societe Generale pay a monetary fine and may in addition impose other sanctions,&#8221; the bank said in the update, adding that it was impossible to determine with certainty the amount of the fine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is possible, without it being certain, that the pending discussions lead to an agreement in the next weeks or months&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The bank had 2.2 billion euros in litigation provisions as of end-September.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: CNBC.
