{"id":6178,"date":"2017-11-14T12:51:23","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T09:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=6178"},"modified":"2017-11-16T10:59:24","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T07:59:24","slug":"nachalsya-sudebnyj-process-po-delu-fifa-prokuror-obvinil-chinovnikov-v-poluchenii-vzyatok-na-milliony-dollarov","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/nachalsya-sudebnyj-process-po-delu-fifa-prokuror-obvinil-chinovnikov-v-poluchenii-vzyatok-na-milliony-dollarov\/","title":{"rendered":"Fifa corruption trial hears allegations officials took millions in bribes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2017\/nov\/13\/fifa-corruption-trial-new-york-marin-napot-murga\">The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>South American officials face prison time if found guilty in US court<\/li>\n<li>Defendants deny counts of racketeering and wire fraud<\/li>\n<li>New York court told of importance of football around the world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Inside a packed New York City courtroom, and under heightened security on Monday, US prosecutors accused three former South American football administrators\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2017\/nov\/06\/fifa-scandal-fbi-new-york-trial-chuck-blazer-sepp-blatter\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">of taking millions of dollars in bribes<\/a>\u00a0as part of a web of endemic corruption at the heart of the sport\u2019s governing body, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FIFA\">Fifa<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos%C3%A9_Maria_Marin\">Jos\u00e9 Maria Marin<\/a>, the 85-year-old former head of Brazil\u2019s football federation, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juan_%C3%81ngel_Napout\">Juan \u00c1ngel Napout<\/a>, the 59-year-old Paraguayan who was president of South American football\u2019s governing body <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CONMEBOL\">Conmebol<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manuel_Burga_Seoane\">Manuel Burga<\/a> the 60-year-old former president of the Peruvian football federation, have denied multiple counts of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Their trial is the first in a sprawling federal corruption investigation of Fifa that was announced in May 2015 after several officials\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2015\/may\/27\/several-top-fifa-officials-arrested\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">were arrested during a morning raid on a hotel in Zurich<\/a>. Since then over 40 officials and marketing executives have been charged by US authorities with 23 already pleading guilty.<\/p>\n<p>As the defendants looked on, Marin staring ahead, Burga with his head in his hand and Napout appearing to take frantic notes, assistant US attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edny\/pr\/american-sports-marketing-executive-pleads-guilty-racketeering-and-corruption-charges\">Keith Edelman<\/a> pointed to each of the men and told the jury: \u201cThese defendants cheated the sport in order to benefit themselves.\u201d He added that they \u201cdid it year after year, tournament after tournament, bribe after bribe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trial will focus on how marketing and sponsorship rights were sold for two major South American tournaments, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copa_Am%C3%A9rica\">Copa Am\u00e9rica<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copa_Libertadores\">Copa Libertadores<\/a>, as well as the Brazilian domestic tournament <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copa_do_Brasil\">Copa do Brasil<\/a>. The officials are accused of regularly taking six figure bribes.<\/p>\n<p>During his opening remarks, Edelman singled out an event in May 2014 in Miami, Florida, where\u00a0Fifa officials had gathered to announce a special centennial expansion of the Copa Am\u00e9rica, which would be held in the United States for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy all appearances it\u2019s a proud moment in the history of the game,\u201d Edleman told the jury.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThere are drinks, press conferences but underneath the surface are lies, greed, corruption. Some of these officials had other reasons to celebrate, they had agreed to receive millions of dollars in bribes regarding the tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edelman said the US government would present evidence, derived from witness testimony, bank records, covert recordings and other documentation that proves each of the officials had received bribes. Marin, Edelman said, had received \u201cmillions into a US bank account\u201d. Napout, the prosecutor alleged, had received his money in cash, sometimes \u201cover $100,000 at a time\u201d, whereas Marin, who had been the subject of a domestic corruption investigation, had told a middleman to \u201chold onto the money until the coast was clear\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In each of their openings defense attorneys did not deny there has been corruption at Fifa, but said their clients were not part of it. They accused the US government of relying on the testimony of\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/fifa\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Fifa<\/a>\u00a0officials who had already pled guilty and cooperated with authorities in order to reduce their own sentences.<\/p>\n<p>Argentinian-Italian marketing executive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alejandro_Burzaco\">Alejandro Burzaco<\/a> is expected to be a key government witness, and according to Napout\u2019s attorney, <a href=\"http:\/\/pineravazquezlaw.com\/attorney_profile.html\">Silvia Pinera<\/a>, got a \u201csweetheart deal\u201d after he \u201cturned himself in and began telling stories\u201d. She accused the US government of paying other guilty officials hundreds of thousands of dollars to remain in the country to testify and providing their families with visas to the United States.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1 u-h ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|620,1|620,350|fluid\" data-google-query-id=\"CJui5JPQvdcCFQiIsgod4xYDNA\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve been here for years on our dimes,\u201d Pinera told the jury. \u201cWe\u2019re the taxpayer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bruceudolf.com\/\">Bruce Udolf<\/a>, an attorney for Burga, argued that the government had \u201csimply gone too far\u201d and \u201csimply got it wrong\u201d by charging his client, labelling the allegations \u201cdespicable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve made a lot of righteous charges against a lot of bad people. But Manuel Burga is not one of them,\u201d Udolf said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ballardspahr.com\/people\/attorneys\/stillman-charles.aspx\">Charles Stillman<\/a>, Marin\u2019s attorney, likened the conspiracy to a match of football among children, arguing his client had remained out of the game while other more senior officials dictated the play.\u00a0 \u201cMarin was not one of them,\u201d he told the jury. \u201cHe\u2019s kind of like the youngster standing off to the side, picking up daisies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both prosecutors and defense attorneys were at pains to explain to the court the significance of Fifa and football itself by comparing them to US sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt [Fifa] is kind of like the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Football_League\">NFL<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_League_Baseball\">Major League Baseball<\/a> but it\u2019s for soccer all around the world,\u201d Edelman told the jury. He added: \u201cHere and around the world soccer is more than just a sport. It\u2019s a passion, a way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trial is expected to last up to six weeks.
