{"id":6418,"date":"2017-11-21T18:13:24","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T15:13:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=6418"},"modified":"2017-11-23T16:25:21","modified_gmt":"2017-11-23T13:25:21","slug":"eksperty-yuar-eskom-dolzhna-pokazat-chto-c-korrupcii-est-posledstviya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/eksperty-yuar-eskom-dolzhna-pokazat-chto-c-korrupcii-est-posledstviya\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Eskom must show there are consequences for corruption&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/2017-11-21-eskom-must-show-there-are-consequences-for-corruption\/\">The Sunday Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Former finance minister <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nhlanhla_Nene\">Nhlanhla Nene<\/a> and other experts have spoken out about the problems afflicting <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eskom\">Eskom<\/a> during a panel discussion in Johannesburg.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/piet_staden\">Piet van Staden<\/a>\u201a chairperson of the <a href=\"http:\/\/eiug.org.za\/\">Energy Intensive Users Group of Southern Africa<\/a>\u201a said Eskom must show there are consequences for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/politics\/2017-11-16-ramaphosa-calls-for-immediate-probe-into-corruption-at-soes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">corruption and state capture<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe need to get this state capture\u201a corruption things\u201a out in the open.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Van Staden was one of the panelists in a discussion about the power utility at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_the_Witwatersrand\">University of Witwatersrand Business School<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannesburg\">Johannesburg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/witsbschool\">Rod Crompton<\/a>\u201a director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbs.ac.za\/international-office\/\">Wits Business School Energy Leadership Centre<\/a>\u201a research has found just more than one in four South Africans (26%) will not source their energy from Eskom by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Van Staden said this will eat into Eskom\u2019s sales and change who their customers are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kusile_Power_Station\">Kusile<\/a> unit is available\u201a you may not be able to follow the rapid change in demand required due to renewables in the grid\u201a\u201d Van Staden said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new capacity [of Eskom] is coming on the market at the exact time when the whole landscape is being changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nene said Eskom needs \u201csome serious surgery\u201d but the power utility is \u201ctoo critical and central to our economy to be allowed to fail\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoominfo.com\/p\/Deon-Joubert\/1710287683\">Deon Joubert<\/a>\u201a who works on economic regulation at Eskom\u201a said one of the problems in South Africa is municipalities who buy about 42% of Eskom\u2019s energy and sell it to residents at higher prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have an artificial mechanism that is stimulating the switching [to other power sources].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said Eskom cannot be fixed in isolation and needs good management\u201a and government policy and regulation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/person.asp?personId=130214925&amp;privcapId=105915737&amp;previousCapId=182346979&amp;previousTitle=greenTEK%20ventures%20Sarl\">Thembani Bukula<\/a>\u201a chief executive of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerx.energy\/\">POWERX<\/a> and former regulatory member at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nersa.org.za\/\">National Energy Regulator<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nersa.org.za\/\">Nersa<\/a>)\u201a said policies were made on the assumption that Eskom was going to fund itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt assumed an efficient and a prudent operator. Something that Eskom has proved not to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bukula said Eskom must rely on their infrastructure as their core business.<\/p>\n<p>The audience applauded when Bukula said: \u201cThe kilowatt hours business is not their business. It has gone past them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nene said it would be a \u201cwelcoming development\u201d if government started listening to industry expertise\u201a which he believes does not exist within the current administration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: The Sunday Times.
