A top Chinese general hanged himself at his home last week after becoming the latest prominent official to be swept up in President Xi Jinping<\/a>\u2019s wide-ranging corruption campaign, state-run media reported Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chinese People\u2019s Liberation Army<\/a> Gen. Zhang Yang<\/a>, director of the powerful Central Military Commission<\/a>\u2019s (CMC<\/a>) political department, was under investigation over alleged links to disgraced former Gens. Guo Boxiong<\/a> and Xu Caihou<\/a>, who had both served as vice chairmen of the commission, the official Xinhua News Agency<\/a> reported.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The probe had verified that Zhang \u201cgravely violated discipline\u201d and was \u201csuspected of giving and taking bribes,\u201d though the origin of a vast amount of assets was unclear, Xinhua said, citing the commission.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the afternoon of Nov. 23, Zhang Yang hanged himself at home,\u201d Xinhua reported.<\/p>\n

A commentary posted to the Chinese Defense Ministry<\/a>\u2019s website said the investigation into Zhang began on Aug. 28.<\/p>\n

It said he had \u201clost his moral bottom line\u201d and had used suicide to \u201cescape punishment from the party and country.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis former general of high position and great power used this shameful way to end his own life,\u201d the commentary added.<\/p>\n

Beijing has embarked on a broad crackdown on corruption under Xi, with the powerful Chinese leader vowing to target both \u201ctigers and flies,\u201d or high-level officials and local civil servants alike.<\/p>\n

Xi\u2019s campaign has taken down heavy hitters including former security chief Zhou Yongkang<\/a> \u2014 the most senior-ranked official since the founding of the People\u2019s Republic of China to be tried and convicted of corruption charges.<\/p>\n

It has also targeted widespread graft in the military, detaining and investigating Xu on suspicion of bribery \u2014 including the practice of exchanging \u201ccash for ranks\u201d \u2014 in March 2014, in one of the highest-profile corruption investigations in PLA<\/a> history.<\/p>\n

At the time of his arrest, Xu held the military\u2019s top post, as vice chair of the CMC. The chairmanship is customarily occupied by a civilian, usually the general secretary of the Communist Party<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Xu was expelled from the Communist Party<\/a> in June 2014, but died of cancer while he was facing legal proceedings from the corruption charges.<\/p>\n

Guo was investigated in 2015 and later charged with taking bribes in exchange \u201cfor aiding in the promotion (of officers),\u201d according to the Communist Party\u2019s graft watchdog, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tuesday\u2019s Defense Ministry commentary explicitly linked Zhang\u2019s alleged corruption to Guo and Xu.<\/p>\n

Zhang\u2019s \u201cserious violation of discipline and law once again warned us that the full and complete removal of Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou influence \u2026 and the fight against corruption has a long way to go,\u201d the commentary said.<\/p>\n

Rooting out corruption is at the forefront of Xi\u2019s ambitious goals for China\u2019s military. During a speech to the twice-a-decade Chinese Communist Party congress last month, Xi set a 2050 deadline for transforming the country\u2019s military into \u201cworld-class forces.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a glowing profile of the Chinese leader earlier this month, Xinhua said that \u201cmore than 100 PLA officers at or above the corps-level, including two former CMC vice chairmen, have been investigated and punished\u201d since the party\u2019s 18th congress in 2012.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe number is even greater than that of army generals who died in the battlefield during revolutionary times,\u201d it boasted.<\/p>\n

But experts say the Chinese leader has also used the anti-corruption campaign to further solidify his grip on power by targeting rivals, ensuring that any threat to his reign be kept in check.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
