However, the average bribe declined to R1\u201a550 in 2017\u201a from R2\u201a200 in 2016 and R2\u201a005 in 2015.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most bribes were paid for traffic offences (39%)\u201a driving licences (18%)\u201a to secure jobs (14%)\u201a to receive public services (8%) and to avoid criminal charges (7%).<\/p>\n<p>Respondents said <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economic_Freedom_Fighters\">EFF<\/a> leader <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julius_Malema\">Julius Malema<\/a> was the most committed to busting corruption\u201a followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Democratic_Alliance_(South_Africa)\">DA<\/a> leader <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mmusi_Maimane\">Mmusi Maimane<\/a>. Malema got the vote of one in five participants (18%) while Maimane scored 17% in the 2017 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.2oceansvibe.com\/2017\/11\/29\/latest-sa-bribery-survey-results-are-out-and-theyre-not-pretty\/\">Citizens\u2019 Bribery Survey<\/a>. No other leader got more than 10% of mentions.<\/p>\n<p>The DA is seen as the party that fights corruption the most, at 45%\u201a followed by the EFF at 28% and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_National_Congress\">ANC<\/a> at 19%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the first time that bribes for police matters and criminal charges are in the top five. Avoiding traffic offences has been the most common type of bribe for three years in a row\u201a&#8221; researchers said.<\/p>\n<p>This is the third year the institute has conducted the survey. The sample group consisted of 4\u201a962 participants. The institute said they were a &#8220;largely representative&#8221; sample of the population in terms of race and household income. The participants live in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gauteng\">Gauteng<\/a>\u201a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/KwaZulu-Natal\">KwaZulu-Natal<\/a>\u201a the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Cape\">Western Cape<\/a>\u201a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Limpopo\">Limpopo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_State_(province)\">Free State<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Almost four out of 10 participants (37%) said they knew someone who had been approached for a bribe in the past year. More than three out of 10 participants (35%) refused to pay a bribe\u201a with almost half (47%) citing &#8220;moral reasons&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Seven out of 10 South Africans (71%) said they would vote for another political party if they thought their party was enabling corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Prof <a href=\"http:\/\/newsletter.gccbdi.org\/calendar-of-events-2016\/calendar-of-events-2017\/27-28-september-2017-developing-ethical-work-culture-role-board-dubai-uae\/\">Deon Rossouw<\/a>\u201a CEO of The Ethics Institute\u201a said researchers noticed that leaders affected the ethical environment. &#8220;People look to leaders to role model desirable behaviour.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: Business Day.
