Ex-Gov. Cuomo<\/a> aide Joe Percoco<\/a> doesn\u2019t want to be lumped in with poster boys for government corruption.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lawyers for the\u00a0accused bribe-taker and his alleged co-conspirators<\/a>\u00a0successfully petitioned to have a Manhattan federal courthouse<\/a> remove a hallway display featuring famous convictions before his January trial.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The wallboards \u2014 part of an exhibit celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals<\/a> \u2014 featured 11 giant posters heralding high-profile federal convictions, including those of ex-New York Congressman Mario Biaggi<\/a>, former Bridgeport<\/a> Mayor Joseph Ganim<\/a>, former hedge-fund manager Raj Rajaratnam<\/a> and even Mafia don John Gotti<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But lawyers for Percoco and the other defendants wrote Manhattan federal Judge Valerie Caproni<\/a> in October to complain about the display, which they said could prejudice jurors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe display is clearly meant to capture the eye of anyone passing by,\u201d said the letter by lawyer Daniel Gitner<\/a> on behalf of the group of defendants.<\/p>\n

\u201cA juror might assume from the display that a conviction in a public corruption case will later be celebrated, and this could encourage the juror, either consciously or on a subliminal level, to vote for conviction.\u201d<\/p>\n

The posters were recently removed.<\/p>\n

They have been replaced by a much less controversial exhibit \u2014 on former Manhattan federal-appeals-court judges who went on to the US Supreme Court<\/a>, including Thurgood Marshall<\/a>, Sonia Sotomayor<\/a> and Ruth Bader Ginsburg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased that our voices were heard. It is the right result,\u201d said Percoco\u2019s lawyer, Barry Bohrer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Second Circuit Court Executive Karen Greve Milton<\/a>, whose duties would include overseeing the exhibit, did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Percoco \u2014 who was so close to the Cuomos that he was\u00a0referred to as a \u201cthird son\u201d<\/a>\u00a0by the governor\u2019s dad \u2014 stands accused of participating in a widespread kickback scheme that\u00a0allowed him to pocket $315,000 in bribes<\/a>\u00a0from two companies looking to do business with the state.<\/p>\n

The former political aide referred to bribe payments as \u201cziti<\/a>,\u201d a reference from \u201cThe Sopranos<\/a>,\u201d prosecutors have said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
