{"id":7163,"date":"2017-12-15T14:12:18","date_gmt":"2017-12-15T11:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=7163"},"modified":"2018-05-31T14:07:58","modified_gmt":"2018-05-31T11:07:58","slug":"byvshego-minekonomrazvitiya-priznali-vinovnym-v-korrupcii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/byvshego-minekonomrazvitiya-priznali-vinovnym-v-korrupcii\/","title":{"rendered":"Court jails former Russian economy minister for corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/dec\/15\/russia-jails-former-economy-minister-alexei-ulyukayev-for-corruption\">The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexei Ulyukayev sentenced to eight years in prison and fined $2.2m in case that has shocked liberal elements of Russia\u2019s elite.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Moscow court has sentenced a\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/dec\/07\/russian-politician-in-2m-corruption-trial-says-sorry-for-not-fighting-injustice\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">former Russian economy minister<\/a>\u00a0to eight years in a high-security prison for corruption, in a verdict that is likely to send chills through the Russian elite.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alexei Ulyukayev was also ordered to pay a $2.2m (\u00a31.7m) fine as part of the punishment for soliciting a $2m bribe from Igor Sechin, the chief executive of the state oil company Rosneft, who is widely seen as the second most powerful man in\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/russia\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Russia<\/a>\u00a0after Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p>Ulyukayev was arrested in a sting operation at Rosneft\u2019s headquarters last year, after Sechin handed him a basket containing $2m in specially marked $100 bills. Sechin said in his testimony that Ulyukayev had asked for the bribe during a game of billiards at a summit in India.<\/p>\n<p>The former minister said he had never made any demands and assumed the basket contained sausages or wine. There was little evidence in the case except Sechin\u2019s testimony, and he refused to show up at court despite receiving several summons. He said he was too busy.<\/p>\n<p>The trial was a rare case of the vicious infighting between government clans spilling out into the open. Putin has attempted to portray himself as above the fray, but said at his\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/dec\/14\/vladimir-putin-annual-press-conference-2017\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">annual press conference<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday that he did not understand why Sechin had refused to appear in court.<\/p>\n<p>In a sign that there may still be a behind-the-scenes battle going on over the case, an unnamed source told the Tass news agency that Ulyukayev\u2019s health meant he may not have to serve the time in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The case has widely been seen as Sechin\u2019s revenge for Ulyukayev opposing Rosneft\u2019s takeover of another oil company. While Russian courts rarely give innocent verdicts, many were expecting a suspended sentence as a compromise. The harsh sentence sent shockwaves through the more liberal parts of the Russian elite.<\/p>\n<p>Alexei Kudrin,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2011\/sep\/26\/alexei-kudrin-leaves-russian-government\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a former finance minister<\/a>, tweeted: \u201cAn awful, unfounded sentence. Weak and biased investigative work. Unfortunately, many people are suffering this kind of injustice today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/dec\/07\/russian-politician-in-2m-corruption-trial-says-sorry-for-not-fighting-injustice\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">final words to the court<\/a>\u00a0last week, Ulyukayev insisted he was innocent, but apologised for turning a blind eye to injustice during his time in government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am guilty instead of too often agreeing to compromise, of taking the easy way out and choosing my career over standing up for principles,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: The Guardian.
