{"id":8814,"date":"2018-02-15T16:58:20","date_gmt":"2018-02-15T13:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=8814"},"modified":"2018-04-11T14:36:38","modified_gmt":"2018-04-11T11:36:38","slug":"vskryvshie-korrupciyu-vlastej-venesuelskie-zhurnalisty-bezhali-iz-strany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/vskryvshie-korrupciyu-vlastej-venesuelskie-zhurnalisty-bezhali-iz-strany\/","title":{"rendered":"Venezuelan Journalists Flee After Receiving Threats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/7613-venezuelan-journalists-flee-after-receiving-threats\">OCCRP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Four Venezuelan journalists have fled the country after being threatened and sued for reporting irregularities in food distribution companies linked to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicol%C3%A1s_Maduro\">Maduro<\/a> government, reports\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/internacional\/2018\/02\/06\/america\/1517882614_458516.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El PAIS<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Investigative journalists <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alfredomeza\">Alfredo Meza<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ewalds6\">Ewald Scharfenberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jopoliszuk\">Joseph Poliszuk<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robertodeniz\">Roberto Deniz<\/a> of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/armando.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Armando.info<\/a>, recently published two reports on inflated food prices within the government food distribution system, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comit%C3%A9_Local_de_Abastecimiento_y_Producci%C3%B3n\">Comit\u00e9s Locales de Abastecimiento y Producci\u00f3n (CLAP)<\/a> at a time when the nation is coping with a food crisis.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The two stories published in April and September of 2017 exposed the continued relationship the Maduro administration has with notorious Colombian businessman\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-venezuela-pdvsa-contract-specialrepor\/special-report-in-venezuelas-murky-oil-industry-the-deal-that-went-too-far-idUSKCN1061U9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Saab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Venezuela is importing food through a company called <a href=\"https:\/\/groupgrandlimited.com\/\">Group Grand Limited<\/a> and is distributing it through the CLAP program which is designed to supply citizens with food that is unavailable in supermarkets.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In 2016, the opposition-dominated <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Assembly_(Venezuela)\">National Assembly<\/a> claimed that CLAP food baskets were sold at premium prices to favor businessmen close to the government. The Armando reports revealed that Group Grand Limited priced items like tomato sauce at US$7.39 per kilo, when the market value is roughly $5. The difference in prices of items has been flagged by the Venezuelan opposition as indicative of corruption.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The articles linked Alex Saab to the deals between Group Grand Limited and the Venezuelan government.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Following the publication, the journalists and the organization received threats and had their personal information shared on social media, in addition to a lawsuit waged by Saab. He accused the reporters of continued defamation of reputation and aggravated injury charges, which carry a prison sentence of one to six years.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe are not going to submit to a court whose judgment is already written, as our lawyers tell us,\u201d exiled journalist Alfredo Meza told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occrp.org\/en\/daily\/7613-venezuelan-journalists-flee-after-receiving-threats\">OCCRP<\/a>. \u201cJustice in Venezuela is a big farce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Saab is known for harassing journalists. He has sued <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gerardo_Reyes_(journalist)\">Gerardo Reyes<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Univision_Communications\">Univision<\/a>, in Miami, for his investigation into Saab\u2019s businesses. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecuador\">Ecuadorian<\/a> government has opened an investigation into Saab\u2019s construction company <a href=\"https:\/\/elcooperante.com\/fondo-global-de-construccion-la-empresa-de-alex-saab-vinculada-a-guisos-con-mision-vivienda\/\">Fondo Global de Construcci\u00f3n<\/a>, and its connections with the Venezuelan government.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/armando.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Armando.info<\/a>\u00a0is an organization that conducts investigative reporting. Among the investigations they\u2019ve done are the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Panama_Papers\">Panama Papers<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/armando.info\/AiData\/Outsourcing_Militar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Military Outsourcing<\/a>.
