{"id":8844,"date":"2018-02-16T17:31:23","date_gmt":"2018-02-16T14:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=8844"},"modified":"2018-04-11T14:26:00","modified_gmt":"2018-04-11T11:26:00","slug":"novyj-prezident-yuar-rasskazal-o-nacionalnoj-antikorrupcionnoj-strategii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/novyj-prezident-yuar-rasskazal-o-nacionalnoj-antikorrupcionnoj-strategii\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa: Cyril Ramaphosa to outline anti-corruption strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/feb\/16\/cyril-ramaphosa-south-africa-president-first-major-speech\">The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New president to deliver first major speech vowing to prioritise economic growth and combat inequality.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyril_Ramaphosa\">Cyril Ramaphosa<\/a>\u00a0will outline his strategy to restore economic growth, fight corruption and tackle entrenched inequality in South Africa in the first major speech of his presidency.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The former deputy president was sworn in as head of state hours after being elected unanimously by parliament to replace <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacob_Zuma\">Jacob Zuma<\/a>, who\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/feb\/14\/jacob-zuma-resigns-south-africa-president\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">resigned late on Wednesday<\/a>\u00a0following accusations of corruption and economic mismanagement.<\/p>\n<p>In a short speech in parliament on Thursday, Ramaphosa, 65,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/feb\/15\/cyril-ramaphosa-to-be-elected-president-of-south-africa-jacob-zuma\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">vowed to fight graft<\/a> and unite South Africans.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"710\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pp2XddHbxt0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIssues to do with corruption, issues of how we can straighten out our state-owned enterprises and how we deal with \u2018state capture\u2019 are issues that are on our radar screen,\u201d he said, in a reference to alleged improper influence over government institutions, ministers and state-owned businesses by Zuma\u2019s associates.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa reached out to opposition parties, telling parliamentarians \u201cSouth\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/africa\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Africa<\/a>\u00a0must come first in everything we do\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not yet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uhuru\">uhuru<\/a>\u00a0(freedom). We have never said it is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uhuru\">uhuru<\/a>. We are going to seek to improve the lives of our people on an ongoing basis, and since 1994, we have done precisely that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"atom--snippet__headline\">Who is Cyril Ramaphosa?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"atom--snippet__item\">\n<h3 class=\"atom--snippet__heading\"><b>Early life<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Ramaphosa was born in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soweto\">Soweto<\/a>, a township near <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johannesburg\">Johannesburg<\/a> and the centre of the anti-apartheid struggle, in 1952.\u00a0He became involved in activism to end the apartheid system while studying at university and was arrested in 1974, spending 11 months in solitary confinement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"atom--snippet__item\">\n<h3 class=\"atom--snippet__heading\"><b>End of apartheid<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>After graduating, he co-founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Union_of_Mineworkers_(South_Africa)\">National Union of Mineworkers<\/a>, which is now one of the biggest and most powerful trade unions in\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/southafrica\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">South Africa<\/a>.\u00a0Ramaphosa was a key part of a taskforce that led South Africa&#8217;s transition to democracy and is credited with being a skilled negotiator. Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nelson_Mandela\">Nelson Mandela<\/a> describing him as one of the most gifted leaders of the &#8220;new generation&#8221;, Ramaphosa failed to get the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_National_Congress\">ANC<\/a> nomination to succeed Mandela as president in 1999.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"atom--snippet__item\">\n<h3 class=\"atom--snippet__heading\"><b>Buinessman<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>After that blow, Ramaphosa swapped politics for a lucrative foray into business, using his union connections and becoming one of the richest men in the country. His popularity took a knock in 2012 when police shot dead 34 striking workers at a mine operated by London-listed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lonmin\">Lonmin<\/a>. At the time of the killings, Ramaphosa was on the board of directors and had called for a crackdown on the strikers, whom he accused of &#8220;dastardly criminal&#8221; behaviour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"atom--snippet__item\">\n<h3 class=\"atom--snippet__heading\"><b>Return to politics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In 2012 Ramaphosa returned to politics and two years later he became South Africa&#8217;s deputy president.
