The money \u2013 made through corruption during the military regime of General <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sani_Abacha\">Sani Abacha<\/a> \u2013 was placed in accounts held locally by a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Virgin_Islands\">British Virgin Islands<\/a> company, <a href=\"https:\/\/kyc360.com\/article\/doraville-properties-corporation-v-her-majestys-attorney-general-foreign-enforcement-of-us-forfeiture-order-kleptocracy\/\">Doraville Properties Corporation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 the assets were frozen by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Courts_of_Jersey#Royal_Court\">Royal Court<\/a> following an application by the US authorities. Since then, Doraville has lodged several legal challenges to lift the property restraining order.<\/p>\n<p>Both the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Courts_of_Jersey#Royal_Court\">Royal Court<\/a> and later <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Courts_of_Jersey\">Jersey\u2019s Court of Appeal<\/a> dismissed the company\u2019s applications. And Doraville recently failed in its last available legal challenge, after the Privy Council rejected the company\u2019s latest application.<\/p>\n<p>The funds will now remain frozen in Jersey pending the registration of a civil asset recovery order in the Royal Court. It is understood that once the funds are freed, they will be returned to Nigeria and Jersey is unlikely to receive a share.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.careyolsen.com\/news-and-deals\/robert-macrae-appointed-as-hm-attorney-general-of-jersey\">Robert MacRae<\/a> said: \u2018In restraining the funds at the request of the United States of America, through whose banking system the funds were laundered prior to arriving here, Jersey has once again demonstrated its commitment to tackling international financial crime and money laundering.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In earlier court cases, it was revealed that General Abacha, who was president of Nigeria from 1993 until his death five years later, and his associates, stole millions of dollars from public reserves.<\/p>\n<p>The funds were later laundered through the US by several people, including General Abacha\u2019s son, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mohammed_Abacha\">Mohammed<\/a>.
