{"id":9079,"date":"2018-02-27T11:28:09","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T08:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=9079"},"modified":"2018-03-18T17:06:20","modified_gmt":"2018-03-18T14:06:20","slug":"yuzhnokorejskaya-prokuratura-potrebovala-dlya-eks-prezidenta-30-let-tyurmy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/yuzhnokorejskaya-prokuratura-potrebovala-dlya-eks-prezidenta-30-let-tyurmy\/","title":{"rendered":"Prosecutors demand 30 years in prison for ousted President Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"http:\/\/english.yonhapnews.co.kr\/national\/2018\/02\/27\/0301000000AEN20180227001852315.html\">Yonhap News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEOUL, Feb. 27 (Yonhap) &#8212; Prosecutors on Tuesday demanded 30 years in prison for former President <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Park_Geun-hye\">Park Geun-hye<\/a>, who was ousted in a massive corruption scandal that toppled her from office early last year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They also asked the <a href=\"https:\/\/wn.com\/Seoul_Central_District_Court\">Seoul Central District Court<\/a> to fine her 118.5 billion won (US$110.4 million).<\/p>\n<p>The court is expected to deliver its ruling in late March or early April.<\/p>\n<p>Park, 66, was indicted in April last year on 18 charges including bribery, abuse of power and leaking state secrets.<\/p>\n<p>She was accused of colluding with her longtime friend and confidante <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Choi_Soon-sil\">Choi Soon-sil<\/a> to extort 77.4 billion won from big conglomerates, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samsung\">Samsung<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lotte_(conglomerate)\">Lotte<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SK_Group\">SK<\/a>, in exchange for business favors.<\/p>\n<p>She was also found to have let Choi meddle in state affairs even though she held no official authority or post in the government. Park has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution said Park privatized presidential authority to peddle influence and sullied constitutional values.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a result of that, the defendant became the first democratically-elected leader of this country to have been removed from office,&#8221; it said. &#8220;That also has left an inerasable blemish in history.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution also noted Park&#8217;s lack of sincerity over the course of the trial. She refused to attend a hearing after the court extended her detention in October, raising questions over the fairness of the judiciary. Park also did not show up for Tuesday&#8217;s trial.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not only has she insisted on denying the charges, but she also deceived and misled the public about the truth of the influence-peddling by accusing this case of being a political payback,&#8221; it said, pointing out on the need for a hefty punishment for the defendant.<\/p>\n<p>Park was removed from office in March on a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constitutional_Court_of_Korea\">Constitutional Court<\/a> ruling. She has been under presentencing detention since she was arrested later that month.
