{"id":9205,"date":"2018-02-28T18:29:41","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T15:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=9205"},"modified":"2018-03-18T16:40:36","modified_gmt":"2018-03-18T13:40:36","slug":"vlasti-indii-arestovali-syna-eks-minfina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/vlasti-indii-arestovali-syna-eks-minfina\/","title":{"rendered":"Karti Chidambaram, arrested in INX Media case, was destroying evidence: CBI sources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/india\/story\/karti-chidambaram-arrested-in-inx-media-case-destroying-evidence-in-uk-cbi-sources-claim-1179215-2018-02-28\">India Today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karti_Chidambaram\">Karti Chidambaram<\/a>, who was arrested in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/9X_Media\">INX Media<\/a> case today morning, was destroying evidence while in the United Kingdom (UK), sources from within the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Bureau_of_Investigation\">Central Bureau of Investigation<\/a> claim.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Karti, a Congress leader and the son of former Finance Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P._Chidambaram\">P Chidamabaram<\/a>, was arrested because this belief &#8211; that he has destroyed evidence in UK &#8211; within the CBI, the sources added.<\/p>\n<p>A special team of officers from the CBI&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chennai\">Chennai<\/a> unit was waiting for him at the city&#8217;s airport where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/fyi\/story\/inx-media-case-money-laundering-case-cbi-arrested-karti-chidambaram-for-in-10-points-1179181-2018-02-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karti Chidamabaram<\/a>\u00a0landed today.<\/p>\n<p>The CBI questioned him on his UK visit, but Karti did not respond to the agency&#8217;s questions, the sources added.<\/p>\n<p>Karti Chidambaram will also be produced in a court in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delhi\">Delhi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/fyi\/story\/inx-media-case-money-laundering-case-cbi-arrested-karti-chidambaram-for-in-10-points-1179181-2018-02-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karti\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/fyi\/story\/inx-media-case-money-laundering-case-cbi-arrested-karti-chidambaram-for-in-10-points-1179181-2018-02-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chidamabaram<\/a>&#8216;s arrest, the CBI finds itself at the centre of a raging political controversy. The Congress has said that the arrest is proof of the ruling <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bharatiya_Janata_Party\">Bharatiya Janata Party<\/a>&#8216;s &#8216;vendetta&#8217; politics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the classic diversionary tactic of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Narendra_Modi\">Modi<\/a> government to hide their own corrupt governance model that is being exposed on a daily basis &#8211; be it <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nirav_Modi\">Nirav Modi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mehulschoksi\/\">Mehul Choksi<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/dwarka-das-seth-scam-cbi-issues-lookout-circulars-against-accused\/articleshow\/63083371.cms\">Dwarka Das Seth Jewellers<\/a>,&#8221; Congress&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Priyanka_Chaturvedi\">Priyanka Chaturvedi<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>CBI sources, however, defended the agency, saying that they have enough documentary evidence against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/fyi\/story\/inx-media-case-money-laundering-case-cbi-arrested-karti-chidambaram-for-in-10-points-1179181-2018-02-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karti Chidambaram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the arrest, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bharatiya_Janata_Party\">BJP<\/a> spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sambit_Patra\">Sambit Patra<\/a> said, &#8220;If corrupt are being jailed and law is taking its own course, I see no reason why any political party should cry vendetta. This is law, not vendetta.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>INX Media Case<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>INX Media, which was once owned by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Mukerjea\">Peter Mukherjea<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indrani_Mukerjea\">Indrani Mukerjea<\/a>, the prime suspects in the money laundering case had shown a transaction of Rs 10 lakh named against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaubacorp.com\/company\/ADVANTAGE-STRATEGIC-CONSULTING-PRIVATE-LIMITED\/U72300TN2005PTC056878\">Advantage Strategic Consulting Pvt Ltd<\/a>, a firm which is indirectly owned by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/fyi\/story\/inx-media-case-money-laundering-case-cbi-arrested-karti-chidambaram-for-in-10-points-1179181-2018-02-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karti Chidambaram<\/a>, as management consultancy charges towards a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foreign_Investment_Promotion_Board\">Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB)<\/a> notification and clarification.<\/p>\n<p>CBI has allegedly said that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/fyi\/story\/inx-media-case-money-laundering-case-cbi-arrested-karti-chidambaram-for-in-10-points-1179181-2018-02-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karti Chidambaram<\/a>\u00a0took money from INX Media and used his influence and power to manipulate a tax probe against the company regarding a case of violation of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foreign_Investment_Promotion_Board\">FIPB<\/a> conditions to get an investment from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mauritius\">Mauritius<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Enforcement_Directorate\">Enforcement Directorate (ED)<\/a> had registered a case under <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foreign_Exchange_Management_Act\">Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA)<\/a> for diverting foreign direct investment by three Mauritius based companies in INX Media to its step down subsidiaries without prior approval of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Foreign_Investment_Promotion_Board\">Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/snapshot.asp?privcapId=28705517\">New Vernon Private Equity Limited<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Silk_Route\">New Silk Route (NSR) PE Mauritius<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sgpbusiness.com\/company\/Dunearn-Investment-Trading-S-Ingapore-Pte-Ltd\">Dunearn Investment<\/a> (Mauritius) were the three companies in INX Media involved.<\/p>\n<p>After an investigation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.incometaxindia.gov.in\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Central Board of Direct Taxes<\/a> which came up with the tax history of the INX group, it suggested that Mukerjeas were involved in laundering Rs 305 crore through Mauritius into 8 different INX subsidiary companies.<\/p>\n<p>A case was filed against Karti seeking probe by CBI and Enforcement Directorate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to: India Today.
