{"id":9391,"date":"2018-03-07T13:52:33","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T10:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anticorr.media\/?p=9391"},"modified":"2018-03-15T18:19:25","modified_gmt":"2018-03-15T15:19:25","slug":"prodyusery-filma-volk-s-uoll-strit-vyplatyat-shtraf-v-60-mln-po-delu-o-moshennichestve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anticorr.media\/en\/prodyusery-filma-volk-s-uoll-strit-vyplatyat-shtraf-v-60-mln-po-delu-o-moshennichestve\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;The Wolf of Wall Street&#8217; producers to pay $60 million to U.S. in lawsuit settlement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-malaysia-scandal-redgranite\/the-wolf-of-wall-street-producers-to-pay-60-million-to-u-s-in-lawsuit-settlement-idUSKCN1GJ0FH\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) &#8211; The company behind the 2013 film, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wolf_of_Wall_Street_(2013_film)\">The Wolf of Wall Street<\/a>\u201d, agreed to pay the United States government $60 million to settle a civil lawsuit that sought to seize assets allegedly bought with money stolen from a Malaysian state fund.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The film\u2019s producer, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Granite_Pictures\">Red Granite Pictures<\/a>, co-founded by the Malaysian prime minister\u2019s stepson, announced last September that it had \u201creached a settlement in principle\u201d with the U.S. government, but did not reveal any sum at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">According to a filing in a California court on Wednesday, the company also settled claims against its rights and interests in two other films, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daddy%27s_Home_(film)\">Daddy\u2019s Home<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dumb_and_Dumber_To\">Dumb and Dumber To<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe are glad to finally put this matter behind us and look forward to refocusing all of our attention back on our film business,\u201d Red Granite said in a statement on the filing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">U.S prosecutors, pursuing their biggest kleptocracy asset recovery initiative, had claimed the three films were financed by Red Granite using money misappropriated from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1Malaysia_Development_Berhad\">1Malaysia Development Berhad<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1Malaysia_Development_Berhad\">1MDB<\/a>), a state fund founded in 2009 by Malaysian Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Najib_Razak\">Najib Razak<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While Najib has not been the subject of any of the lawsuits, a number of his close associates, including stepson <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Riza_Aziz\">Riza Aziz<\/a>, have been named by U.S. investigators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Najib and Riza have consistently denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Malaysian prime minister\u2019s office did not respond to an emailed request from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-malaysia-scandal-redgranite\/the-wolf-of-wall-street-producers-to-pay-60-million-to-u-s-in-lawsuit-settlement-idUSKCN1GJ0FH\">Reuters<\/a> for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Wednesday\u2019s filing said Red Granite would pay the government in three installments: $30 million within 30 days, $20 million within the next 180 days, and the final $10 million within 180 days after that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Film studio <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paramount_Pictures\">Paramount Pictures<\/a>, which has held profits from \u201cDaddy\u2019s Home\u201d while the case was pending, would release the funds to a government-controlled account.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The forfeiture suit was part of a broader U.S. action to seize some $1.7 billion in assets allegedly bought with funds misappropriated from 1MDB.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The U.S. prosecutors had asked for the civil forfeiture suits to be put on hold last year while they pursued a criminal investigation. Last week, the Justice Department asked a court to lift the stay so that the settlement could be reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Under the terms of the settlement, Riza will draw no salary from Red Granite during the payment period, other than what is needed to maintain health insurance coverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The settlement also stipulates that the payment should not be construed as \u201can admission of wrongdoing or liability on the part of Red Granite\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The U.S. lawsuits have also sought to seize a $3.2-million <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pablo_Picasso\">Picasso<\/a> painting, allegedly bought from 1MDB funds and gifted to Hollywood actor <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leonardo_DiCaprio\">Leonardo DiCaprio<\/a>, the star of The Wolf of Wall Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leonardo_DiCaprio\">DiCaprio<\/a> has since turned over the painting to U.S. authorities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This material belongs to:\u00a0Reuters.
