US authorities accused ex-Las Vegas mayor on corruption charges

Former Las Vegas Mayor Tonita Gurule-Giron has appeared in court on corruption charges, including bid rigging, bribery and abuse of power while in office. Associated Press agency reports.

US authorities has accused Gurul-Girona of using her position to give her then-boyfriend and contractor Marvin Salazar city contracts, whom nobody had heard of before. At the same time, the official received illegal kickbacks from the contractor.

A jury found her guilty of receiving illegal kickbacks and ethics violations.

53-year-old Marvin Salazar also faces several charges of fraud and corruption.

A sentencing date has not been set.
