US authorities arrest psychiatrist for $ 10 million insurance fraud

A psychiatrist in the United States was arrested for fraud with insurance companies, which he billed for $ 10 million in treatment. At the same time, he did not provide assistance to patients and forged documents.

According to the US Department of Justice, Gustavo Kinrys 49-year-old has been charged with fraud, false statements and falsification of documents relating to health care matters.

US Attorney Andrew E. Lelling noted that fraud in the Medicare system is a persistent, long-term problem.

– Physicians who defraud the system are taking dollars that could otherwise be used to support patient health, – said the prosecutor.

Kinrys was a licensed psychiatrist who owned and operated the Advanced TMS Associates located in Natick, Massachusetts. Among his main services, Kinrys provided transcranial magnetic brain stimulation (TMS) and psychotherapy for depressed patients.

The indictment alleges that between January 2015 and December 2018, Kinrys engaged in a variety of fraudulent billing schemes in which he sought and received reimbursement for services he did not render.

For example, Kinrys billed US national health insurance program Medicare and private insurance companies over $ 10 million for more than 8,000 TMS therapy sessions and more than 1,000 personal sessions that he never provided. At the same time, it was established that during these sessions he and his patients were sometimes outside the country.

– On hundreds of occasions, it is alleged that Kinrys billed Medicare and private insurers for having provided more than 24 hours’ worth of psychotherapy services in a single day, – the U.S. Department of Justice said in a press release.

According to one of the psychiatrist’s statements to the insurance company, in 2017 he conducted psychotherapy sessions for 79 different patients in one day.
