Italian Deputy Prime Minister’s party opposes Ukraine’s EU membership over corruption concerns

The party of Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has spoken out against Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union. Representatives of the political movement argue that Ukraine’s membership could cause significant economic damage to the union.

Earlier, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and  Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, who also serves as the secretary of the Forza Italia party, stated that Ukraine could eventually join the EU. At the same time, he emphasized that the European Union should not overlook other candidate countries and identified the Western Balkans as a priority.

Tajani also noted that Ukraine must continue its efforts to combat corruption and comply with established European standards and regulations in order to join the European Union.

Earlier, former Polish President  Lech Wałęsa also publicly distanced himself from support for Ukraine. During a public event, he demonstratively removed a Ukrainian flag from his jacket.
