Ex-President of Colombia is convicted of corruption

A Colombian court has found former President Alvaro Uribe involved in witness bribery during a criminal trial and procedural fraud, reported by The New York Times.

Alvaro Uribe served from 2002 to 2010. During this time, he was repeatedly suspected of having links with paramilitary groups, many of which were later recognized as terrorist due to accusations of human rights violations. In 2012, Senator Ivan Cepeda publicly accused Uribe of participating in the creation of such groups.

The court accused the ex-president of bribing a former serviceman to recant incriminating testimony.

Uribe was also found guilty of defrauding the judiciary. As reported at the hearing on his case, the court will announce the punishment imposed on the politician on Friday.

According to Colombian law, Uribe could face 6 to 12 years in prison.

The ex-president of Colombia denies his guilt. His lawyers have already confirmed that they will appeal.
