South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has removed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu from his position after high-profile accusations of links to organized crime were made against him, according to The New York Times.
These allegations were brought against Minister Mchunu by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the commander-in-chief of police for the southern province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Mkhwanazi claims that Mchunu shut down a unit investigating political assassinations in order to protect himself and others from the control of politicians, prosecutors, police officers, and members of the judiciary linked to the crime syndicate.
In response, President Ramaphosa announced the initiation of a criminal investigation into Minister Mchunu and accused other officials of interfering with police efforts to combat organized crime.
– An independent commission will investigate the roles of current and former senior officials in government institutions who may have been involved in the alleged criminal activity, – said President Ramaphosa.
The investigation into the case of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is ongoing. Minister Mchunu has denied the charges.
