A federal judge in Brasilia today ordered the retention of the passport of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was sentenced to twelve years in prison for corruption, and banned him from leaving Brazil, official sources said.

The decision, which was already communicated to the Federal Police, responsible for the control in the customs of the airports, occurred a few hours before the trip that the ex-head of State has planned to Ethiopia to participate in an event on the fight against hunger in the world organized by FAO in the framework of the Thirtieth Summit of the African Union.
