Officers from the State Committee for National Security of Kyrgyzstan (SCNS) have detained former mayor of Bishkek Aziz Surakmatov for corruption and illegal enrichment.
– The facts of corruption and illegal enrichment were established when representatives of certain construction companies were provided with municipal land plots for construction of elite multi-storey residential buildings. Former mayor of Bishkek Aziz Surakmatov was detained, – the press center of the SCNS said.
According to the investigation, Surakmatov, occupying senior positions in the City Hall, used his official position for illegal enrichment. In particular, he was the author of a large corruption scheme in which officials of the City Hall and representatives of large construction companies were involved. They acquired municipal plots with the right to build commercial buildings and residential high-rise buildings.
After the creation of this corruption scheme, the assets of the ex-mayor and his family increased sharply and are estimated at over $ 50 million.
Surakmatov resigned from office in October 2020 amid protests.
