Italian prosecutors accuse ex-Prime Minister of corruption

The Florence prosecutor’s office requested trial indictment for former Italian Premier Minister Matteo Renzi for alleged illegal political party funding.

The Associated Press reports with reference to local newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Renzi’s accounts reportedly received $1.2 million in suspicious financial transactions. Renzi said he received the money for legal consulting services.

The ex-premier denies any accusations and in a tweet said he has filed a complaint against the prosecutor’s office about the abuse of power.

Matteo Renzi served as Prime Minister of Italy from 2014 to 2016. Now he is a senator and heads the Italia Viva party in parliament.
